Job Summary
This supervisory position reports to the Wastewater Plant Superintendent of the City’s Utilities Department. The role supervises the daily activities of wastewater operators and trainees, manages plant operations, and ensures compliance with all regulatory criteria and safety policies.
Responsibilities- Supervise wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance.
- Supervise the daily work of wastewater operators and trainees; scheduling, approving leaves, instructing, assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others; maintain standards, coordinate activities, select new employees, conduct performance appraisals, act on employee problems and recommend transfers/promotions, discipline, and terminations.
- Review the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluate and make recommendations as appropriate; provide training, advice, and assistance.
- Make routine operational adjustments to maintain productivity and compliance; recommend major adjustments to the Superintendent.
- Review daily technical data and logs.
- Assist operators in troubleshooting and correcting system and equipment problems.
- Inform mechanics of mechanical defects; prepare work order requests; make minor repairs; assist on maintenance projects.
- Inspect operations buildings, systems, and equipment for proper condition and safety; take preventative and corrective action as necessary.
- Ensure proper maintenance of vehicles and equipment; supervise regulation and adjustment of motors, pumps, blowers, valves, and other apparatus.
- Assist in preparing the annual budget; order chemicals, parts, supplies, and materials; maintain accurate inventories.
- Ensure safety procedures are followed by all subordinates.
- Coordinate plant activities and maintenance with other divisions and outside agencies/contractors as required.
- Maintain plant security.
- Assist in the development and implementation of programs and standard procedures.
- Respond to after-hours emergency calls seven days per week, 24 hours per day.
- Prepare and submit various records and reports including budget documents, regulatory reports, log sheets, monthly operating reports, production reports, laboratory reports, flow charts, graphs, statistical analyses, training reports, purchase orders, performance appraisals, memos, and other records.
- Operate a vehicle and various other equipment, including a computer, calculator, diagnostic equipment, test equipment, pumps, motors, laboratory equipment, generators, mechanic's tools, and hand and power tools.
- Interact and communicate with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other department supervisors and employees, subordinates, customers, city/county personnel, regulatory agencies, sales representatives, consultants, other utilities, and the general public.
- Associate's degree in science engineering or related field supplemented by 3-5 years of responsible experience in wastewater system operations, some in a leadership/supervisory capacity.
- Valid state of Florida Class A Wastewater Operators license at time of appointment or ability to obtain within six months.
- Vacations: up to ten days for permanent full-time employees in first year; accrual begins from first month but cannot be used until after third month.
- Sick leave: one day per month for permanent full-time employees; accrual begins from first month but cannot be used until after third month.
