Job Description

The Asphalt Distributor Operator is responsible for operating the tack truck to apply liquid asphalt (tack or prime) prior to paving. This role includes performing routine maintenance, ensuring proper application techniques, and supporting general job site operations. The operator must be knowledgeable in all aspects of asphalt paving and work closely with the paving crew to ensure efficient and safe project execution.

Job Duties
  • Operate asphalt distributor truck to apply tack or prime coat as specified.
  • Load and unload distributor materials and burner fuel.
  • Set spray bars and spray joints/surfaces accurately.
  • Clean tanks and spray bars of excess asphalt.
  • Perform minor servicing and maintenance on equipment; report major issues to supervisor.
  • May assist with shovel work, setting string line, and screed extension adjustments.
  • Maintain job site cleanliness and assist with general housekeeping.
  • Check and maintain grade stakes.
  • Safely operate company vehicles and equipment in compliance with safety protocols.
  • Maintain all tools and equipment provided by the company.
  • Operate additional equipment as needed (rollers, trucks, power broom, tamp, skid steer).
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and extended shifts as required by project schedules.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Experience & Knowledge
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Over 1 year of experience operating a distributor truck preferred.
  • Solid understanding of asphalt paving including:
  • Preparatory work
  • Grades and drainage
  • Paving patterns
  • Aggregate sizes
  • Job specifications
  • Oil consistencies
  • Compaction techniques
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and perform basic math (fractions, decimals).
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.

Exercise sound judgment to follow instructions and make minor decisions within standard procedures.

Physical Activity & Demand
  • Frequent sitting, climbing, and use of hands.
  • Occasional standing, walking, crawling, kneeling, bending, and reaching overhead.
  • Ability to lift/move 10 to 100 lbs.
  • Continuous mental and visual attention required to avoid hazards.
  • Specific vision abilities: close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception.
Working Conditions
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, heat, fumes, seasonal temperature changes, and machine noise.
  • Hazards include potential for sprains, burns, and other injuries from struck-by or caught-between incidents.
