Augusta University's Department of English and World Languages in the College of Art, History and Humanities is seeking to fill a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of English specializing in Creative Writing (Poetry) anticipated to begin August 2026. Candidates are expected to demonstrate evidence of a promising research or creative activity agenda and teaching effectiveness. The successful candidate should be prepared to consistently publish and teach at all levels of the curriculum, including freshman composition.

They should also be prepared to lead and promote the visibility of our events and programs, such as Sand Hills Literary Magazine, Speakers Series, Young Writers Competition, Senior Showcase, and Creativity Day. In addition to being an active presence on campus, the successful candidate will complement our existing faculty by helping to forge campus and community partnerships. They will also be committed to mentoring students beyond the classroom and fostering a collegial departmental environment.

Responsibilities

  • Teach 4-5 undergraduate courses in poetry and college composition each year as assigned by the Chair per academic year. Courses may include The Art of Poetry, Poetry Workshop, Creative Writing Capstone, Special Topics in Writing, Composition 1 and 2 and others as assigned.
  • Maintain regular office hours; advising; grading; and following university policies regarding teaching (e.g., reporting attendance and holding final exams during assigned times)
  • Create, update, and submit course syllabi/outlines to the department
  • Maintain ambitious scholarly agenda
  • Promote student success by engaging in activities that enhance student learning and position learners to be successful in achieving their short- term and long-term academic, career, and personal growth goals.
  • Participate in shared governance of department, college, and university as assigned.


Required Qualifications

An MFA or PhD in Creative Writing (or English with a concentration in Creative Writing)

Assistant Professor
- Terminal degree (or nearing its completion), or its equivalent in training, ability, and/or experience.

Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
  • Evidence of ability as a teacher;
  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.


Preferred Qualifications

  • A strong record of professional success and publication or evidence of promise of future recognition in the field
  • Published poetry collection or a substantive record of publication and a second book of poetry under contract
  • Experience advising and mentoring students
  • Experience with grant writing and fundraising
  • Expertise in digital publishing and editing
  • Expertise in a secondary genre (fiction or creative nonfiction)
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering communities of belonging.

    Experience with online teaching is also desirable.
Shift/Salary/Benefits

This position is academic year based and typically works August through May, depending on dates outlined in offer letter and yearly contract.

The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0.

- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
