Summary Description

Under the direction of the school principal, special education director and supervisors, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Acts as the lead facilitator in the development of Individual Education Programs (IEP) and all documentation required in its implementation. Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student.

Supervises students in a variety of school‑related settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes. Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff and community. Develops, selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Provide both direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities.
  • Prepare for IEP/RTI team meetings and provide case management for assigned students with disabilities.
  • Interpret formal and informal classroom assessments to make instructional decisions. Collect data on student performance to improve outcomes and direct instruction.
  • Administer and interpret formal assessments as appropriate and maintain student portfolios with current educational data.
  • Select and adapt materials to assist students with disabilities to access the general education curriculum.
  • Participate in professional development activities designed to advance teacher knowledge in differentiation and best practices.
  • Supervise and plan professional development for paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom.
  • Assist in the review of students with learning disabilities and provide input to IEPs, including diagnostic programs (Ed Performance, Riverdeep, Compass Learning).
  • Takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, RCSS policy and administrative regulation.
  • Assist the administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Develop reasonable classroom rules of behavior and procedures, maintaining fair order.
  • Be available to students and parents for education‑related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested under reasonable terms.
  • Establish relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community that reflect recognition of and respect for every individual.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for instructional assistants, paraprofessionals and volunteers.
  • May evaluate paraprofessional job performance with department heads and/or administrators.
  • Appraise own effectiveness and demonstrate successful application of skills and information to increase effectiveness.
  • Participate in school management and share responsibility for the total school program.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
  • Meet required deadlines for annual reviews and eligibility re‑determination.
  • Assist students with additional needs such as toileting, feeding, etc., and provide health services such as intermittent catheterization, tracheotomy care, tube feeding, dressing changes or colostomy bag collection as appropriate.
  • Complete all required paperwork according to compliance within given time frames.
  • Maintain fair and accurate grading policies, attendance, email and web pages using the RCSS technology system.
  • Carry out any other duties assigned by supervisor, school personnel, law, board policy, regulation, or handbook as reasonably necessary to the efficient operation of the school system.
Knowledge, Abilities, And Skills

Knowledge of the RCSS curriculum for the grade/content range of the position and the RCSS special education program.
