Job Qualifications
  • Education
    :
    Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education (teaching), behavioral sciences, or related field preferred but not required.
  • Certification or Licensure: NONE
  • Skills: Knowledge of special education regulations. Ability to function as a professional colleague, communicate well and effectively, promote parent views and issues.
  • Work Experience: Ideal candidates bring experience working directly with families of students with disabilities in school, district, or community-based settings. Experience supporting parents through the special education process, participating in IEP or problem-solving meetings, and helping families understand safeguards, services, and available resources is essential. Experience collaborating with educators, administrators, and related service providers is essential, as is the ability to communicate clearly and compassionately with families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Relevant experience may also include serving as a parent advocate, family liaison, or mentor, providing parent training or informational support, and documenting family contacts while maintaining strict confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and IDEA. Candidates may have professional, volunteer, or lived experience as a parent or guardian of a student with a disability, along with demonstrated involvement in school-based decision-making. Experience in education, social services, community outreach, or family support roles is also valued.

This job description is intended to provide an overview of the essential responsibilities, qualifications, and expectations of the Special Education Parent Mentor position within the Richmond County School System (RCSS). It is not intended to be an all-inclusive list of duties. RCSS reserves the right to assign additional responsibilities or modify job duties as necessary to meet district, school, and student needs.

Employees are expected to perform all duties as assigned. The order in which duties are listed does not reflect their level of importance or priority.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as liaison to encourage a collaborative partnership between parents, educators, agency personnel and community members as they work together.
  • Serve on Special Education Parent Advisory Committee.
  • Coordinate activities for the Parent Advisory Committee.
  • Assist Director of Special Education with Child Find.
  • Assist with Parent Training.
  • Attend local and statewide training.
  • Work with Public Information Department regarding parent training activities.
  • Assist parents, caregivers, and other persons interested in the education of students with disabilities by providing necessary information for transition and other post‑secondary options.
  • The employee shall carry out such other and further duties, whether specifically listed above or not, as are assigned or required by such employee’s supervisor, other appropriate school personnel, law board policy administrative regulation, department handbook, as are reasonably necessary to the efficient operation of the school system and its mission.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
