Job Summary

The department of Physics and Biophysics at Augusta University invites applications for a tenure‑track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank. All conventional areas of physics are considered, though emphasis may be given to applicants who can contribute to the biophysics areas and work well within a top‑ranked health sciences university. The department’s diverse activities include sensor development, materials sciences, and atomic physics in support of the Bachelor of Science degree program.

Members work collaboratively across the university, nationally, and worldwide. The successful candidate is expected to develop an independent, novel research program and to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching through graduate and/or undergraduate instruction. Scientists in the department work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment fostered by interactions across many science and medical disciplines. Research areas of interest are in conventional physics, with some preference for biophysics.

Responsibilities
  • Teaching Expectation (40%):
    Lecture and lab courses within the undergraduate degree program in physics and core science courses including astronomy. Minimum requirement is a Ph.D. in Physics, Astrophysics or a closely related field. Responsibilities include grading, office hours, class preparation, and compliance with university policies.
  • Research Expectation (50%):
    Develop an independent, novel research program and demonstrate a strong grant and publication record. Collaborate with other researchers, publish results, and co‑author grants.
  • Service Expectation (10%):
    Work on department, college, and university committees, work groups, and campaigns to promote and support Augusta University’s mission.
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Physics in a fundable research area with a strong publication record in ranked peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) requirements for institutional accreditation; evidence of ability as a teacher; evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned; successful experience (waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong publication record in ranked peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Ability to develop an independent, novel research program.
  • Excellence in teaching.
Shift/Salary/Benefits

The position is academic‑year based and typically works August through May, depending on dates outlined in the offer letter and yearly contract. The intended work commitment or full‑time equivalent (FTE) is 1.0. Assistant Professor salary and compensation are commensurate with education, experience, and achievements, and are subject to the availability of funds. Full‑time employees who have been employed for more than 6 months may be considered for the Tuition Assistance Program. Rank and salary are determined at the time of hire based on experience, education, credentials, specialty, training, etc., while also considering internal equity and market data. Advancement through the faculty ranks at Augusta University is only through the annual Promotion and Tenure process.
