Assistant Vice President of Finance & Hospital Operations
Location: Augusta, Georgia

The Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Finance & Hospital Operations will be based in Augusta, Georgia and serve as an on‑site financial resource focusing on the fiscal responsibilities of the entity—including revenue growth and bottom‑line performance—from the hospital perspective.
Job Summary- Coordinate with on‑site managers and directors to develop budgets in a lead capacity, complementing Well Star System Accounting and Finance departments and Service Line leaders.
- Review monthly cost center performance against budget, provide rational explanations for variances, and assist in implementing corrective actions for unapproved budget variances.
- Support corporate accounting with the monthly closing of the general ledger for the entity.
- Create business plans and pro formas for initiatives and review actual performance against these plans.
- Manage capital planning and budget for capital projects for the hospital/entity.
- Provide leadership for operational areas, ensuring financial, clinical quality, engagement and customer service performance.
- Deliver financial education programs for facility management staff to ensure compliance with Well Star’s budget and financial goals.
- Develop global financial statistics.
- Assist on‑site management in developing reasonable operating and capital budgets.
- Review and assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements and identify significant variances.
- Review monthly department budgets for expense management and cost‑reduction opportunities.
- Provide leadership to assigned operational departments.
- Oversee Hospital Outpatient Department operations, including regulatory and compliance leadership.
- Actively participate in system initiatives and develop leadership teams for each department.
- Review monthly department results to ensure consistent progress and provide feedback on processes.
- Implement strategic plans and budgets, monitoring performance to expectations.
- Maintain expert knowledge of regulatory and reimbursement structures.
- Maintain knowledge of hospital strategies, identify improvement opportunities and align initiatives with system objectives.
- Communicate internal and external changes, incorporating them into the planning process.
- Participate with the Operations Group and other teams to achieve hospital goals, providing communication and feedback to leadership.
- Analyze denied claim trends and work with Revenue Management to reduce denials.
- Ensure adequate reserves for contractual allowances and analyze net‑to‑gross variances.
- Review issues impacting reimbursement in managed care contracts and governmental programs.
- Ensure charge‑master accuracy and optimal charge capture with Patient Access Services and cost center managers.
- Review daily revenue trends and investigate significant variances.
- Provide financial support to directors responsible for pro formas for new programs.
- Coordinate new program and business plan development in adherence to policy and procedures.
- Follow up on actual performance for implemented business plans and new programs.
- Direct the preparation of reports and analytics for senior leadership, coordinating with Decision Support and other areas.
- Lead financial planning performance work teams on initiatives and process enhancements.
- Provide direction, training and development opportunities to team members.
- Remain flexible with other duties as assigned.
- Comply with all Well Star Health System policies, work standards, and code of conduct.
Minimum Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field is required.
- Master’s Degree is preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of direct finance experience.
- Minimum 5 years in the healthcare field.
- Minimum 7 years of progressive finance or accounting leadership experience.
- Experience in an integrated health system with acute care operations is preferred.
- Progressive operational leadership exposure with awareness of non‑clinical department procedures and processes.
- Demonstrated impact on positive cash flow and cost reduction.
- Highly developed leadership and interpersonal skills, regulatory, reimbursement, financial analysis, and business planning skills.
- Specialized healthcare accounting knowledge, including reimbursements, indigent coverage, managed care contracts, etc.
