Job Summary

The Clinical Ethicist is an active member of the ethics program at Well Star MCG Health performing clinical ethics consultation, ethics education and ethics policy development and review. The Ethics Program enjoys robust institutional support and is a leader in the field of clinical, organizational and research ethics. The health system is creating a fully integrated, collaborative approach to addressing ethical issues and the clinical ethicist is key to developing this initiative.

The individual reports directly to the leadership team for the Ethics Program.

Core Responsibilities And Essential Functions
  • Ethics Consultation:
    Responds to health system ethics consultation requests, conducts individual and team consults, analyzes and improves consultation methods, and maintains case records.
  • Bedside Ethics Rounding and Training:
    Develops and implements bedside ethics rounding, provides ongoing training, education, and evaluation of consult service members.
  • Ethics

    Education:

    Plans, delivers, and evaluates ethics education for health care providers, residents, students, and community; develops education materials and distance learning tools.
  • Ethics Programming and Evaluation:
    Contributes to ethics programming (Advisory Group, Liaison Network, Grand Rounds), evaluates service quality, and attends local committees.
  • Ethics Policy Development:
    Reviews and revises system policies related to ethics, ensures compliance with accreditation and agency standards.
  • Ethics Research:
    Conducts collaborative and independent ethics scholarship, publishes findings, and develops the Ethics Assessment Survey.
  • Additional Duties:
    Performs other duties as assigned and complies with Wellstar Health System policies.
Required

Minimum Education
  • Bachelor’s in any field
  • Master’s in any field
  • Doctorate in any field (preferred)
Required Minimum License(s) And Certification(s)

All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

Required Minimum Experience
  • Graduate of an accredited undergraduate university/college
  • Master’s degree in an applicable field (ethics, law, social work, theology)
  • Doctorate in an applicable field (preferred)
  • Minimum 1 year experience working in a health care setting
  • Prior work performing clinical ethics consultation, education, and policy development
  • Minimum 5 years experience performing clinical ethics consultation (preferred)
Required Minimum Skills
  • Knowledge of principles, concepts, and methods of clinical ethics
  • Intermediate computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent communication skills with all stakeholders
  • Ability to work collaboratively with patients and families
  • Experience delivering ethics education programming
  • Willingness to travel to outpatient facilities within Well Star service area
  • Project management and team facilitation skills
  • Strong commitment to professionalization of clinical ethics
