Job SummaryThe successful applicant will have strategic and tactical responsibility for the operations of Bioinformatics Central, consultation, recruiting, overseeing core support staff and provision of leadership in developing core resources and providing research support and training for research faculty and staff at the Georgia Cancer Center. He or she will find a vibrant bioinformatics community of about 15 Ph.D. level researchers.
Responsibilities- Determine Georgia Cancer Center needs and work with core Scientific Directors in setting strategic, scientific, and operational priorities. Provide best practice bioinformatics services to investigators across campus, including pre-experiment/grant consulting, application, and training on the use of bioinformatics core software tools, and integration of user-generated and large-scale public data sets.
- Develop staffing plans and oversee recruitment; oversee developers as necessary, provide management of database design, interface design and information processing.
- Coordinate a monthly seminar series, special trainings and mini-courses and organize user groups for bioinformatics related activities. Develop and promote the funding model for expansion and sustainability of the core, including investments from organizational units around the community, charge-back models, and collaborative grant applications to ensure long term sustainability.
- Lead and collaborate on grant applications related to bioinformatics core projects.
- Enable implementation of scalable workflows to disseminate analytical advances to the research community.
- Participate in leading national and international efforts aimed at establishing best practices and standards for omics basic science and potentially integration with clinical data representation and analysis. Has full responsibility for planning, monitoring, and managing department budget.

Ph.D. from an accredited college or university with a minimum of one year directly applicable experience; previous supervisory experience.
OR
Master's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of five years' progressive grant management, resources management and quality assurance program development experience and previous supervisory experience.
OR
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of eight years' progressive grant management, resources management and quality assurance program development experience and previous supervisory experience.
Preferred QualificationsDemonstrated excellence in analytical, writing, and communication skills. A commitment to providing bioinformatics support for a broad range of scientific projects. Experience in developing and managing projects and people. Extensive knowledge of public domain bioinformatics data sources, public sequence databases, genomics tools, single cell analyses, and gene expression analysis. Evidence of software development experience and proficiency in scripting;
Experience with SQL or other relational database systems, Unix and mixed operating systems environments, high-dimensional data management and analysis;
Proficient in R and Bioconductor. Python proficiency preferred. Advanced skills with analysis and creating and maintaining databases (metadata).
Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices, and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations. Ability to lead and direct multiple collaborative teams for large projects or groups both internal and external to the Medical Center and across functional areas. Results have significant implications for the management and operations of the organization. Ability to lead operational initiatives to meet or exceed customer service standards and expectations in assigned unit(s) and/or across multiple areas in a timely and respectful manner.
Ability to maintain confidentiality. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented with strong prioritization and organizational skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
Shift: Days;
Monday - Friday (work outside of the normal business hours will likely be required of an employee in an exempt level position)
Pay Band: B12
Salary Minimum: $62,300 - $65,000
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
