Systems Engineer, Cloud Computing
Summary
The VMware Infrastructure Engineer is a member of a skilled IT team responsible for designing, operating, and evolving the virtualized infrastructure that underpins a rapidly scaling intelligence application. This role supports both steady‑state operations and modernization initiatives, including the planned transition from traditional virtual machine–based deployments to containerized platforms such as Kubernetes and Red Hat Open Shift. This role will be at Fort Gordon in Augusta, GA.
EssentialFunctions
The VMware Infrastructure Engineer performs system integration and infrastructure engineering activities that include virtualization design, capacity planning, system analysis, testing, documentation, and operational support. The role provides direct support to development, security, and operations teams, collaborates with technical writers and testers, manages configuration baselines, and ensures system reliability through disciplined change management and patching practices. Source control and configuration management tools are used to track infrastructure changes and maintain system integrity across environments.
This position is responsible for architecting, deploying, and maintaining VMware‑based environments, including compute, storage, and networking components, in support of mission applications operating across multiple IC networks. The engineer designs scalable, resilient virtual infrastructure, performs upgrades and lifecycle management of VMware platforms, and troubleshoots performance and availability issues. Documentation of infrastructure administration procedures—including provisioning, scaling, backup, recovery, and decommissioning—is an essential responsibility.
In addition to core VMware operations, the engineer actively supports platform modernization efforts by enabling container‑ready infrastructure and hybrid architectures. This includes preparing virtual environments for container platforms, integrating virtualization with Dev Sec Ops pipelines, and supporting the migration of workloads from virtual machines to containerized deployments. The role works closely with application and Dev Sec Ops teams to ensure VMware environments can serve as a stable foundation for Kubernetes and Open Shift adoption, including networking, storage, and security integrations required for container orchestration platforms.
QualificationsThe role requires strong knowledge of VMware technologies and enterprise virtualization concepts, combined with an understanding of Dev Sec Ops practices and Infrastructure as Code using tools such as Ansible or Puppet. Candidates must have experience administering Linux systems within virtualized environments, including command‑line operations, service management, and system configuration. Familiarity with networking, storage concepts, and security controls in virtualized data centers is required, along with the ability to support complex, multi‑environment deployments.
The engineer must demonstrate an understanding of containerization concepts and orchestration platforms, including how traditional virtual infrastructure supports and transitions to Kubernetes‑based architectures. Experience working alongside data ingestion or application teams, and the ability to collaborate across disciplines, is essential.
Preferred QualificationsPreferred experience includes supporting intelligence community environments and understanding mission‑driven operational constraints. Familiarity with container platforms such as Kubernetes or Red Hat Open Shift, especially in hybrid VM‑to‑container transition scenarios, is highly desirable. Experience integrating virtualization platforms with CI/CD pipelines, security scanning tools, and compliance frameworks further strengthens a candidate’s fit for this role.
