General

Summary:

This role oversees the management of state prisoners housed at the Richmond County Correctional Institution. The Warden, serving in a position of special trust, directs the staff unit responsible for monitoring and controlling the institution's operations and administration. All activities are carried out in compliance with state and federal laws, local ordinances, Department of Corrections guidelines, and American Correctional Association standards.

The position reports directly to the Administrator and requires collaboration with inmates, staff, elected officials, judicial and legal representatives, medical personnel, counselors, ministers, media representatives, and the public to ensure effective administrative and operational support.

Key Responsibilities and Performance Standards

* Directs the overall planning, operation, and administration of the Correctional Institution including health care, exercise, sanitation, and humane treatment of inmates.

* Manages and directs the activities of the business unit by planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling the staff and other business resources ensuring established policies and procedures are followed.

* Manages personnel administration of the facility, investigates incidents concerning corrections officers, develops policy and procedures, and assigns road maintenance crews.

* Budgets and accounts for all revenue and expenditures for the department.

* Collaborates all activities with the staff to determine the most practical and desirable facility design in keeping with the budget including the maintenance and security of the facility

* Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

POSITION SPECIFIC

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

* Security and Order, Staff Supervision, Policy Enforcement, Inmate programs, Budget and Resources, Health and Safety, Crisis Management and Community and Government Liaison within the guidelines of state and federal laws, local ordinances, Department of Corrections guidelines, and American Correctional Association Standards

Required minimum qualifications:

Education:

BA/BS degree in criminal justice, sociology, or related field

Experience:

5+ years in similar position or sufficient experience to perform principal duties and responsibilities

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

* Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of criminal justice systems, management, and behavioral science.

* Familiarity with the concepts, practices and procedures of modern correctional facilities.

* Proficiency in self-defense techniques and equipment.

* Mastery of interpreting Department of Corrections guidelines, federal, state, and local laws as related to the incarceration of persons, American Correctional Association standards, and geography of the county.

* Good communication skills, both oral and written.

* Demonstrated ability to work independently and to supervise others.

Licensing/Certification:

* Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with good driving history. If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment.

* Must possess and maintain Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

* Notary Public

This position require staff call up in an emergency situation.

Travel from office to other locations is required of this position.

Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may include ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions; may include ability to compute discount, interest, and ratios; may include ability to calculate surface areas, volumes, weights, and measures.

* Functional Reasoning:
Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or synthesis functions; to deal with several concrete and abstract variables; and to analyze. major problems that require complex planning for interrelated activities that can span one or several work units.
