The Postdoctoral Fellow performs advanced technical work under the supervision of the principal investigator. Responsibilities include planning and performing experiments, analyzing data, presenting data at lab meetings and international conferences, and writing scientific papers and grant applications. Research focuses on the interplay between vascular cells and the extracellular matrix in blood vessel development and disease, using developmental biology, genetic, biochemical, and omics approaches.
Ongoing projects cover: (i) aorta and elastin aortopathy, (ii) ductus arteriosus and patent ductus arteriosus, and (iii) cerebral vasculature and intracranial hemorrhage. The lab uses genetic mouse models and human samples where available.
- Compose articles for publication in scientific journals; review articles prepared by others.
- Supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants, and other research personnel; advise investigators and team members on research techniques and procedures.
- Calibrate, troubleshoot, and operate scientific equipment; instruct others in operating equipment.
- Participate in project planning and development of research protocols; ensure adherence to scientific principles and federal guidelines.
- Conduct experimental studies including cell culture, Western blot, real-time PCR, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, genotyping, and various microscopy/imaging techniques.
- Search the scientific literature, develop new techniques, and present findings at scientific meetings locally, nationally, and internationally.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Ph.D. degree from an accredited college or university.
Preferred QualificationsResearch background in molecular and cellular biology and mouse genetics using multiple techniques including cell culture, RNA/protein analysis, flow cytometry, omics approaches, immunohistochemistry, and in vivo mouse experiments.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities- Knowledge:
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other software/databases, or willingness to learn. - Skills:
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; detail-oriented with strong prioritization and organizational abilities. - Abilities:
Maintain confidentiality; meet deadlines; work with research animals; work independently with general supervision.
Shift: Days, Monday–Friday; some work outside normal hours may be required for exempt positions. Salary commensurate with qualifications within the established range. Benefits include health and dental insurance, life insurance, retirement plans, vacation, sick leave, and holidays. Tuition assistance may be available after six months of employment.
