Research Assistant – MCG Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine

Join Augusta University as a Research Assistant in the MCG Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine division.

Job Summary

This position performs studies on Alzheimer’s disease, neuropsychiatric disorders, and the microbiome using transgenic mouse models in the Seo laboratory. Responsibilities include feeding special diets, administering pharmacological drugs, weighing mice, and performing animal behavior tests. The role involves standardized protocol specimen collection, preparation for histology and biochemical analysis, data collection and documentation, publishing results, molecular biology experiments, minor surgical and microscopic procedures, statistical analysis, and sample processing with microtome/cryostat sectioning.

The candidate will maintain mouse breeding colonies, monitor animal health, assist veterinary staff, ensure safety compliance, and maintain specimen inventory. The position also involves data entry, research technique development, and additional duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Plan experiments independently and develop research protocols while ensuring compliance with scientific principles.
  • Conduct studies on Alzheimer’s disease, neuropsychiatric disorders, and the microbiome using transgenic mouse models.
  • Feed special diets, administer drugs, weigh mice, perform animal behavior tests, and observe daily for illness signs.
  • Maintain breeding colonies, perform genotyping, sacrifice animals, and collect tissues.
  • Perform molecular biology/biochemical experiments, minor surgery, microscopy, and statistical/computational analyses.
  • Execute sample processing by microtome/cryostat sectioning.
  • Collect and document research data per guidelines and publish findings in scientific journals.
  • Maintain safety documentation and laboratory inventory.
  • Develop and evaluate new research techniques and procedures.
  • Perform any other job‑related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, social sciences, natural sciences, life or health care science, or materials science directly related to the research area, with experience in a research or clinical setting.
  • OR associate’s degree in similar fields with a minimum of three years experience in a research or clinical area.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge:
    Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software or databases, or willingness to learn.
  • Skills:

    Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication; detail‑oriented with strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Abilities:
    Maintain confidentiality and meet deadlines; work independently with general supervision; willingness and ability to work with research animals.
Shift / Salary / Benefits

Shift: Days, Monday‑Friday. Pay Band: B5. Salary commensurate with qualifications within the established range. Recruitment Period:
Until Filled.

Benefits include health, dental, and life insurance, Teachers Retirement System or Optional Retirement Plan, vacation time, sick leave, and 13 paid holidays. Full‑time employees eligible after six months may be considered for a Tuition Assistance Program.
