The Facilities Maintenance Technician is responsible for general upkeep, repair, and improvement of building facilities, assets, and grounds. The role requires a proactive approach to ensuring the facility is well maintained, operates efficiently, and safely. Duties include routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and emergency repairs.
Essential Responsibilities & Functions- General Maintenance
- Perform routine inspections of building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, structural).
- Address and repair minor issues such as leaks, faulty wiring, and broken fixtures.
- Conduct basic carpentry, painting, and general repair work.
- Preventative Maintenance
- Develop and implement a preventative maintenance schedule.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and repairs.
- Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all work complies with local building codes and safety regulations.
- Maintain and update safety records (fire alarm systems, emergency lighting).
- Respond promptly to emergencies (power outages, safety hazards, water leaks).
- Wear proper PPE and follow site standards.
- Grounds Maintenance
- Oversee upkeep of outdoor areas (landscaping, snow removal, cleanliness).
- Maintain walkways, parking lots, and other exterior areas safely.
- Communication & Coordination
- Apply preventive measures such as sealants on flat roofs.
- Fix potential safety hazards to avoid injuries.
- Examples of Repairs
- Routine maintenance (structural damage, window/door repair, painting).
- Assist contract support and maintain standard materials.
- Repair plumbing to avoid water damage.
- Minor concrete and roadway repairs.
- General construction, assembly, and installation of non‑production equipment.
- Additional duties if qualified: electrical wiring, HVAC maintenance, rolling stock repairs, fire watch, welding, heavy equipment operations.
- Supervisory Responsibilities – Non‑supervisory but may guide contract personnel as needed.
- Minimum
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One or more years of facilities management experience.
- Preferred
- Completion of a journeyman program or industrial certification.
- 3+ years of facilities management experience in electromechanical, millwright, instrumentation, welding, or related industrial environment.
- Certifications:
HVAC, electrical, welding.
Reading, comprehension, speaking, and writing at required education equivalency level. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business correspondence, technical product information, policies, procedures, and government regulations. Ability to complete written forms, reports, and correspondence, and to present information effectively.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, divide and compute rates, ratios and percent; use precise measuring tools and alignment instruments.
Computer SkillsProficient in Outlook, Excel, and SAP. Proficiency in relevant SAP modules preferred.
Physical DemandsPhysical exertion including sitting, walking, standing, bending, climbing stairs and ladders, carrying/lifting up to 50 lbs. Some work above ground using powered equipment
