Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic
Overview
The City of Augusta is currently seeking a Mechanic to work in Public Works full-time. Skills and qualifications will be reviewed to determine if a candidate starts as a Mechanic I or II. Upon review, anyone hired as a Mechanic I will be eligible to apply to our Apprenticeship Program for Mechanic II. Following initial assessments, current apprenticeship hours may be transferable.
ResponsibilitiesQualified candidates must be skilled in all phases of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair. Candidate will perform troubleshooting, diagnostics and repair work on vehicles and heavy equipment for our central garage. Work involves gas and diesel engine repair, small engines, welding and cutting, drive-train, electrical, hydraulics and troubleshooting. Perform both light and heavy-duty vehicle inspections, share knowledge with other workers, follow detailed work instructions (oral and written), and assist in stockroom inventory.
Work is performed under the direction of the Fleet Services Manager.
Monday thru Friday – 7:00 am – 3:00 pm. However, candidates must have the ability to work non-standard hours for snow removal operations, city functions or in an emergency.
RequirementsMechanic I:
- Two (2) years’ experience as an automotive/small equipment mechanic.
- Must possess a valid State of Maine Motor Vehicle Inspection License (A &
D) or obtain one within six (6) months - Maine Driver License Class B or obtain one within six (6) months.
Mechanic II:
- Five (5) years’ experience as an automotive/small equipment/heavy equipment mechanic.
- Must possess a valid State of Maine Motor Vehicle Inspection License (A &
D) - Maine Driver License Class A or B (valid, clean).
Position is classified as safety sensitive subjecting employees to random drug and alcohol testing program. Applicants must reside within 30 miles of the Augusta Public Works Garage.
Pay ScaleThis is a full-time, non-exempt, union position with a comprehensive benefits package which includes:

Pay range AFSCME 93 B1: $29.71 to $38.48 per hour. (Mechanic II)
Pay range AFSCME 93 B2: $26.94 to $34.91 per hour. (Mechanic I)
Pay will be based on experience.
