Position: Assistant Professor of Justice Studies - Tenure Track (1923)

Assistant Professor of Justice Studies - Tenure Track - Fall 2026

The Justice Studies program at the University of Maine at Augusta invites applications for an Assistant Professor position starting in September 2026. The program is looking for candidates able to teach a variety of law‑related undergraduate courses in the Legal Studies/pre‑law area (Foundations of Law and Justice; Criminal Law; Comparative International Justice; Family Law; etc.), with a preference for candidates also able to teach Criminal Justice‑related courses.

Courses are taught online, primarily in an asynchronous format, with some possibilities for synchronous online courses. In addition to teaching four courses per semester, the candidate will be required to advise students and engage in departmental, university, and public service. The candidate is also expected to engage in scholarly activity such as presenting at conferences and/or publishing articles related to the field.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare course syllabi, develop courses online in Brightspace, and create assessments of learning.
  • Offer courses in a variety of modalities, including in‑person, live online/distance synchronous, as well as asynchronous.
  • Support students in their learning and connect them to UMA resources as needed.
  • Advise students in the major.
  • Teach four classes each semester (fall & spring / total 24 credits), with opportunities to teach additional classes in the summer.
  • Participate in program meetings, UMA committees, community service, and collaborate with peers across the University of Maine System (UMS).

UMA faculty are expected to be excellent teachers, responsive to changing professional needs, committed to innovative delivery of instruction resulting in improved student learning, committed to effective use of technology, including distance learning, involved in scholarly activities as appropriate to the appointment, and to provide service to the community, college, and university.

UMA serves a mix of traditional and non‑traditional students and offers a wide array of liberal arts and professional programs leading to certificates, associate, baccalaureate, and master’s degrees. Programs are delivered on campus and using a network of University centers and sites across the state and internationally. The University offers general education and degree‑specific courses using in‑person, hyflex, distance synchronous, and online instruction.

The successful candidate will be active in university service through student advising, curriculum development, committee activity, and community outreach. Duties of the position may also include supporting the university’s early college programming.

Qualifications

Required

  • Juris Doctor degree; a PhD in a closely related field will be considered if the candidate has significant knowledge of law.

Preferred

  • Experience teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Experience with online teaching or learning.
Salary

The normal hiring range is in the low 60s for a tenure‑track position with a Juris Doctoral degree and is commensurate with qualifications and previous experience, in accordance with the AFUM contract.
