Lead Engineer - Protection & Control

New York State Electric & Gas is seeking a Lead Engineer to oversee electric system protection technology platforms across Maine and New York, ensuring reliability and safety.

Job Summary

Responsible for electric system protection technology platforms in both Maine and New York. Consult and guide project engineers on protection engineering for transmission and substation projects. Evaluate equipment and system effectiveness, lead training, implement new technologies, ensure compliance with codes and standards, liaise across companies, and contribute to system protection strategy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Guide engineering design, estimating, and analysis of transmission and substation protection systems; manage platforms, settings, testing, and commissioning (20%).
  • Develop system protection platform for Avangrid, coordinate with global affiliates, oversee new technology evaluation and implementation (25%).
  • Lead engineering studies to evaluate equipment performance, analyze operational issues, and provide engineering judgment for complex problems (15%).
  • Provide expertise on transmission fault event analysis, produce reports for management (15%).
  • Represent company on regional and national committees (10%).
  • Lead technical development of the Protection Engineering group (15%).
Cross-Company Responsibility

As the primary protection engineering expert in the USA, consult on complex problems, emerging issues, and collaborate across departments and affiliates.

Leadership Expectations for Lead Engineers

Influence and guide department engineers; provide technical leadership on high‑impact projects; mentor and develop team; collaborate across departments; liaise with contractors; work independently with minimal supervision.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent;
    Master’s preferred.
  • Professional engineering license preferred.
  • 7+ years of technical experience in protection engineering or related field.
  • Expert knowledge of engineering design, national and international standards, and compliance requirements for power system protection.
Technical Skills / Competencies
  • Strong theoretical engineering knowledge across planning, operations, design, analytic, modeling, and calculation.
  • Practical engineering experience in planning, operations, construction and field application.
  • Ability to document, interpret, and review engineering work.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and compliance environment including local, state, and federal standards.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills to influence and guide engineers.
  • Mentoring, team development, and independent decision‑making.
  • Advanced diagnostic and problem‑solving ability, especially in protection coordination analysis.
