As a Project Accountant, you will support the ongoing and effective full‑cycle accounting management of current construction projects in alignment with operational and contractual requirements. This role regularly collaborates with Project Managers to assess project costs, profitability and performance. It will also include supporting the monthly financial closes for all Matheson companies.
Key Responsibilities- Complete project set‑up and close‑out by following the proper processes in place.
- Maintain and report on project budgets and cash forecasts on a regular basis.
- Conduct job cost analysis by analyzing project budget variances and performance indexing. Identify reasons for variances, issues, and trends. Propose recommendations to resolve or mitigate.
- Preparation of billing packages, job specific.
- Perform full cycle accounts receivable duties including reconciliation and timely collections.
- Investigate and resolve billing discrepancies and misapplied payments.
- Ability to enter accounts payable invoices in accounting software and make payments.
- Working alongside accounts payable team, ensuring project invoices are coded, entered correctly and processed in a timely manner.
- Allocation of costs to jobs and departments for various invoices such as Bell, Petro Canada.
- Allocation of hourly costs for staff to jobs on a weekly basis.
- Assist with month end processes including job cost accruals, GL reconciliations, monthly journal entries.
- Accumulate, interpret, and analyze financial data for monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
- Act as liaison with operational divisions, providing the respective Project Managers with information (both financial and non‑financial) to assist them in managing their projects.
- Attending Project Managers monthly review meetings with Construction Managers.
- Working closely and cooperatively with colleagues and business unit managers to ensure adherence to all accounting and finance policies and procedures as per the Company and project contracts.
- Coordinate year‑end audit file preparation and assist in any other regulatory audits with external auditors.
- Provide ad‑hoc financial analysis, research and reports for management as requested.
- Prepares correspondence, reports, forms, and specialized documents as required.
- Any other related duties as may be required to meet department and Company objectives.
- Bachelor’s Degree/College diploma in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (Construction Industry Preferred).
- CPA Designation preferred, or in progress.
- Strong and effective communication skills including verbal, written and technical/computer skills.
- Problem solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent teamwork and team building skills.
- Travel to project sites may be required.
