YORK CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD CUPE 2331 Supply Educational Assistant $37.00 per hour Position Summary
Under the direction and supervision of the School Principal, the Supply Educational Assistant is assigned to assist teachers in a class or classrooms where a special need has been identified to support students in their learning by implementing specific programs as directed by the teacher. Educational Assistants do not independently plan, modify, evaluate lessons, or report on the progress of the students.
MajorResponsibilities
- Work closely with the staff in providing guidance, emotional support and encouragement to all students, in accordance with the Boards philosophy on mainstreaming.
- Provide opportunities for student success in fostering self-esteem, promoting positive peer and adult interaction and social skills.
- Implement modified programs to allow students to develop meaningful skills within the school and the community.
- Carry out specific programs in language, behaviour management and physical management as established by the teacher and/or specialist.
- Prepare materials in preparation for programs as required by the teachers.
- Assist the student(s) in the provision of personal and medical care, e.g., dressing, toileting, hygiene, transfers, feeding.
- Assist in supervision of students as outlined in the CUPE 2331 collective agreement.
- Accompany and support students in the community during work placements and excursions.
High school graduation plus a 2-year post-secondary education in fields related to development of children and special education (e.g., Educational Assistant Diploma, Child & Youth Worker Diploma).
ExperienceMinimum of six months of experience. Experience working with children and young adults who have special needs.
Skills And Competencies- Good communication skills.
- Versatile and a team player.
- Training in First Aid and in Non-Violent Crisis Prevention is an asset.
- BMS certified is an asset.
- ASD knowledge.
- Ability to attend to the physical needs of students.
