Job Summary: The mission of the COMPASS Program is to guide medical students through their transformation into physicians, deepen their understanding of how physicians engage with the world, and support their journey toward reaching their full potential. Each student in the Trek curriculum is paired with a faculty COMPASS Guide for all four (or more) years of medical school. COMPASS Guides are longitudinal coaches, dedicated educators, and core faculty in the Trek Curriculum.
They work with approximately 10–20 students, typically onboarding 10 new students every other year, using coaching, self‑reflection, professional identity formation, effective use of feedback, self‑directed learning, and fostering a growth mindset. COMPASS Support Guides provide short‑term and long‑term coverage as part of the educator‑on‑call system, stepping in when full‑time Guides take leave. They teach one to two Wednesday afternoons per month and participate in the backup system.
The posting is for 2‑3 COMPASS Guides and 1 Support Guide.
Supervision Received: This position reports to the Director of the COMPASS Program.
Supervision Exercised: This position has no direct supervision.
Examples of Work Performed: Overview of responsibilities (percentages approximate, may differ between Guide and Support Guide roles):
30% –
Coaching:
- Meet with each student one‑on‑one approximately 5 times per year to review progress and create learning goals
- Meet students as needed for additional coaching or counseling
- Address immediate student issues, including off‑hours concerns in emergent situations with the Office of Student Life (OSL)
- Document all meetings with students
- Maintain close communication with the Office of Student Life about student concerns
- Write letters of recommendation for curricular, postgraduate, and extracurricular opportunities
- Work with the Office of Student Life to craft the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) for residency applications
- Support students in residency application and provide academic/career advising
30% – Teaching:
- During years that students are 1st and 3rd year: facilitate small group sessions on Professional Identity Formation (≈5 sessions per year)
- Facilitate small group sessions on Health and Society (≈5 sessions per year)
- Serve as substitute (backup) facilitator for COMPASS small group sessions for first‑year groups
- Facilitate small group sessions during Advanced Science Courses
- During years that students are 2nd and 4th year: repeat similar facilitation role as above
- Facilitate small group sessions during Basecamp weeks
- Facilitate career‑advising sessions preparing students for residency applications
20% – Assessment:
- Participate in grading notes and oral presentations for the Clinical Performance Exam (Standardized Patient exam) after the core clinical year
- Grade notes and oral presentations for work during the Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships
5% – Trek Progress Committee:
- Attend Trek Progress Committee meetings (≈1 per month)
- Summarize student progress; non‑voting role for coached students
- Voting member reviewing students not coached, determining readiness to advance
- Develop and implement remediation plans for students not coached
5% – Community Building:
- Attend 1st year student orientation (one full day and one half‑day commitment)
- Attend college social events three times per year
- Mentor 4th year Student Leaders (Navigators) on planning/executing events
- Attend three planning sessions with 4th year student leaders (one per semester)
10% – Required Faculty Development:
- Attend required Faculty Development sessions before Trek curriculum launch
- Attend Faculty Development sessions and Guide check‑ins twice per month
- Attend COMPASS retreat for 1 day per year
- Attend individual Faculty Development sessions for each facilitation session
