Job Overview

Under the direction of a licensed pharmacist and following established policies and procedures, the Pharmacy Technician Lead performs a variety of technical procedures to support hospital pharmacy operations. Serves as a subject matter expert within Pharmacy Operations providing mentorship, training, and teaching to Pharmacy Technician staff, interns, and students; develops departmental policies and procedures related to pharmacy operations; assists leadership in the oversight, development, and maintenance of pharmacy services.

Leads safety and quality improvement projects for the department and/or organization and assists Pharmacy Leaders with QSRS review for adverse drug events.

This newly created Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Lead Inventory Management position will provide informal leadership over the procurement and management of medications and supplies for the inpatient pharmacy. This role may help support central pharmacy, and oncology, ICU and OR satellite areas.

Hours per week: 40, eligible for benefits

Shift: Mostly daytime hours with occasional evening and weekend support.

Eligible Incentive: Relocation assistance available for qualified external applicants.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and provides informal oversight and documentation of day-to-day operations, scheduling, and staffing when required to meet department needs; training development and coordination of training for new team members; education, re-education, and evaluation of pharmacy technicians of their assigned roles; and assisting with recruitment of pharmacy technician personnel.
  • Independently prepares medication for dispensing/patient administration in accordance with hospital policy and procedure. Assists trainees with medication preparation.
  • Manages medication inventory within scope, including auditing department policies and procedures to manage outdated medications, cycle counts, unit inspections, and medication transfers. Restocks medications as needed.
  • Collaborates on process improvement assessment of medications for dispensing through pharmacy software while verifying all lot and expiration numbers; follows appropriate pharmacy software procedures when preparing medications.
  • Identifies and audits standard pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in the prescribing and dispensing of medications.
  • Performs and provides training on arithmetic calculations required in medication preparation.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, quality improvement, environmental and infection control standards, adheres to regulatory requirements and maintains environmental cleanliness of the pharmacy areas in accordance with regulatory and policy requirements including accreditation.
  • Reports errors and adverse drug events using the hospital variance reporting program (QSRS). Assists error investigations in partnership with department leaders.
  • Maintains and audits daily workflow to meet established priorities and production requirements and completes daily operations tasks utilizing assigned applications and software.
  • Teaches and trains pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, pharmacy residents, interns, and students. Performs competency assessment of pharmacy technician staff through observation of technician skills and knowledge.
  • Drives safety and quality improvement projects for the department and/or organization.
  • Assists with development of departmental policies and procedures and training programs related to pharmacy operations.
  • May assist with shipping medications, monthly clinical assessments and ordering medications.
  • May interact and communicate with patients, families, providers, and co-workers including point of sale, benefit investigation and insurance coordination.
Minimum Qualifications
  • EDUCATION - High School Diploma or GED
  • EXPERIENCE - Three (3) years of pharmacy technician experience
    • Inpatient pharmacy technician experience and/or purchasing experience strongly preferred.
