Assistant Director of Development

Job SummaryAssistant Director of Development is a hybrid role focused on cultivating and managing benefactor relationships, portfolio management, and strategic fundraising initiatives to support the university’s research, education, and clinical missions.
Essential Duties Benefactor Development, Portfolio Management and Discovery Work (70%)- Cultivate existing and new benefactor relationships (thank you calls, prospecting/cold calls, discovery visits, stewardship touches, etc.) to sustain and increase benefactor engagement.
- Manage a portfolio of 100+ individual, corporate and foundation benefactors capable of making leadership annual gifts ($1,000+).
- Plan and implement programs with measurable targets for personal visits, high‑impact contacts, proposals, and new prospect qualification.
- Ensure timely, accurate completion of discovery outreach, proposals, pledges and fund agreements.
- Document prospect strategies and contact reports; provide outreach to new prospects and stewardship correspondence for leadership gifts.
- Provide proactive cultivation and stewardship to mid‑level benefactors via personal outreach and updates on breakthroughs.
- Compile materials on research breakthroughs and opportunities to educate and inspire benefactors.
- Maintain deep understanding of institutional priorities, academic programs, and centers of excellence to translate assets into compelling funding opportunities.
- Collaborate with CU Anschutz Medical Campus major gift officers, internal directors, the Lead Strategist, benefactor relations staff and Central Office staff to develop and implement fundraising strategies.
- Facilitate productive relationships between benefactors and CU administrators, faculty and staff.
- Thank supporters within 1 week of their gift via phone, personal email, and notecards; identify supporters likely to become major or planned gift prospects.
- Steward existing donor relationships, aiming to retain leadership level donations year‑over‑year.
- Represent the University at events to support the University and cultivate benefactors.
- Perform various other duties as assigned.
Hybrid – 3 days per week on campus and on‑site meetings as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- At least 1 year of professional fundraising experience or related experience (nonprofit administration, public affairs, business development), including managing funding relationships with individuals, corporations or foundations.
- Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a 1‑to‑1 basis.
- Experience in higher education or a medical campus environment.
- 1–3 years experience in Development or Advancement.
- Professional experience calling donors, constituents, and/or customers.
- Professional experience managing relationships with donors, constituents, and/or customers.
Skills and Abilities
- Expert knowledge of BSR Advance and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Expert knowledge of general office procedures, protocol and professionalism; excellent business English, spelling, punctuation and grammar.
- Expert ability to manage multiple tasks, adapt to changing priorities, manage time and meet deadlines.
- Solid knowledge of fundraising concepts, particularly in higher education.
