The Barber Entry Laboratory Sciences Professional will collaborate with and support the Principal Investigator (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions, especially as it pertains to animal work and routine laboratory administration. They will utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects, perform experiments, and analyze research, support analytical testing processes in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, and documenting and communicating results.

The role focuses on projects related to neuroscience and mouse model research. Training will be provided on-the-job. The ideal candidate is excited to learn new skills and has recent coursework in a premedical or STEM field.

The Barber Entry Laboratory Sciences Professional will not directly supervise others but will work closely in a team with graduate students, faculty, staff, and supervisors to support the lab s mission and projects. They will report to Dr. Danielle Barber and collaborate with the Barber lab team, colleagues in the Section of Child Neurology and the Department of Pediatrics, and other CU Anschutz partners.

Key Responsibilities

Perform Research Experiments and Maintain Mouse Research (60%)

  • Colony Management:
    Maintain breeders and weanlings; euthanasia; monitor sick/injured mice; weaning; genotyping or tissue genotyping; ear tagging for identification; maintain colony size based on needs; process cage cards.
  • Colony Paperwork:
    Maintain spreadsheets; bi-weekly census of litters; update mouse status based on breeding, reservations, cage changes, and genotypes; purge old animals to keep databases current; ensure billing accuracy.
  • Complete a colony census monthly for their lab(s) and plan breeder needs.
  • Provide services such as surgical assistance, hypoxia monitoring, and mouse behavior assessments; provide animal care related to research studies as needed.
  • Perform lab tasks including preparing solutions, sectioning mouse brains, mounting brain sections on slides, staining, microscopy, and image analysis following Dr. Barber s directions.
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical test processes and evaluate results.
  • Regularly update written protocols, inventories, and lab notebooks to document experiments performed.

Execute Routine Lab Tasks (20%)

  • Conduct biohazardous waste disposal, safety procedures, and equipment maintenance in compliance with CU Biosafety guidelines.
  • Maintain inventories of laboratory supplies and samples.
  • Provide protocol assistance and add people to protocols as needed.
  • Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, safety, cleanliness, and related areas.
  • Transport and maintain results, samples, documents, materials, and other items as needed.
  • Dispose of laboratory materials and samples according to established guidelines.
  • Order laboratory supplies and maintain stocks of in-house reagents.
  • Review and implement lab support policies and programs to meet needs.
  • Ensure compliance with laws and regulations; seek guidance or escalate as required.

Communicate Data Procedures, Results, and Next Steps (20%)

  • Perform basic data quality checks on experimental data.
  • Troubleshoot issues with supervisory assistance.
  • Present experiments and data at team meetings and weekly lab meetings.
  • Coordinate meetings with lab personnel, ensure research needs are met, and follow up as needed.
  • Expand knowledge on in-house genotyping and related lab lines/experiments.
  • Review, complete, and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials.
  • Provide support by researching issues and developing recommendations to improve processes.

Onsite – this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.
