Overview

The Commissioning Superintendent provides input and technical expertise for utility-scale solar construction projects. Supports engineering review, procurement (if necessary), construction, and start-up of high or medium voltage electrical systems and associated substations (if necessary). Provides technical owner correspondence support. On-site supervision of Field Engineers and General Foremen to ensure a safe, productive, and quality job is attained and costs are controlled in the construction discipline for the project site.

Schedules labor, materials, tools, equipment, and subcontractors within the work discipline to effectively utilize resources; works with specifications and contract requirements.

Primary responsibilities
  • Supervises and directs General Foremen, Field Engineers, and Foremen on-site to ensure optimal use of company resources and adherence to policies and regulations. Provides formal coaching and regular informal feedback.
  • Schedules equipment, materials, tools, and subcontractors to maximize production and minimize costs; collaborates with other projects to share resources.
  • Trains and implements standardized Work Plans and supports process improvement efforts.
  • Acts as electrical consultant to supervisory and field personnel on electrical circuits, power quality, switch gear installations, transmission lines, interconnect systems, and high voltage collection/distribution systems. Supervises electrical subcontractors to ensure effective use of resources and industry processes.
  • Ensures safe working conditions and safety procedures; enforces safety regulations on-site and manages training, risk areas, crane operations, DOT requirements, JHAs, electrical safety hazards, LOTO, and arc flash where applicable.
  • Maintains communication with Site Manager on project status and problem areas; collaborates with Site Manager, other superintendents, and supervision to plan staffing and resource utilization.
  • Assists Site Manager in communicating and negotiating with the owner on major project decisions.
  • Creates a professional environment and collaborates with craft, subcontractors, vendors, and the Owner to improve delivery performance.
  • Monitors costs by comparing actuals to the job estimate and informs the Site Manager of cost overruns and resource utilization.
  • Verifies project construction activities and project engineering align with the Project Quality Plan; establishes and communicates project specifications and craftsmanship expectations; assists in assembling close-out information for meetings.
  • Mentors Field Coordinator/Field Engineers and General Foremen on discipline, production costs, scope, quality, and safety.
  • Identifies potential change orders and informs the Site Manager; familiarizes with site conditions; may act as project leader in Site Manager's absence.
  • Participates in RFI development and technical accuracy; supports local hiring and community engagement as needed.
  • Maintains crew and equipment matrices and updates operations analysis; may visit project sites to support estimating and business development; acts as a liaison with community leaders and landowners.
  • Establishes and maintains resources in alignment with Work Plans.
Education & experience requirements
  • Must have a valid driver's license and acceptable MVR.
  • Ability to supervise many employees; thorough knowledge of tools and equipment; strong communication skills with owners and employees.
  • Solid understanding of job costing; relocation to the project site community is required.
  • May be required to become a qualified individual for contract licensing or journeyman/master electrician license.
  • Ability to read and understand prints and contract documents; knowledge of federal and state codes.
