Overview

Process Automation Engineer – Aurora, Illinois. Experienced technical role in the Process Technology and Engineering (PT&E) group, providing automation expertise to the Nitriles RD&T team in Aurora and implementing automation improvements to enhance safety, efficiency, data collection, and analytics. Involves capital projects, software, automation and controls upgrades, and maintenance of controls and automated safety systems testing. Supports internal and external customers across INEOS Nitriles sites and technology development projects.

Responsibilities

and Accountabilities

SHE Stewardship
  • Maintain safety as the highest priority and abide by all INEOS safety policies and procedures.
  • Understand and promote the INEOS “20 Principles of Safety” and the safety concepts of “Coaching for Safety” and “Stop Work”.
  • Promote safety through communication with employees/contractors before tasks, during meetings, and as opportunities arise.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulatory requirements and strive to meet internal SHE objectives.
  • Ensure work performed is in accordance with site procedures; report deviations and incidents to management.
  • Ensure that technical work is thoroughly reviewed and correctly executed; ensure safety system testing is performed and documented.
  • Develop automation scope to improve safety.
Reliability
  • Meet monthly reliability targets with a focus on continuous improvement. Maintain and upgrade automation systems to support site pilot and lab reliability.
  • Maintain Aurora RD&T DCS, BAS and PI systems, update/create graphics, program control loops, and interface with the data historian.
Process Safety
  • Support the Aurora site Process Safety program, review MOC’s, etc.
  • Support RD&T Process Safety Program, including risk assessments and SIL verification studies.
Technology Development
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to improve efficiency and operations of the Aurora facility. Automate pilot plant equipment and online data collection; enable automatic data transfer of analytical data to a central database; support Smart Manufacturing initiatives.
  • Develop, implement and manage capital projects for automation initiatives in RD&T.
  • Develop plans for central online data acquisition from pilot plant equipment and lab instruments for future AI infrastructure and initiatives, then implement.
Capital Spending
  • Control projects with budget; support budgeting and project execution to minimize timeline and total cost impacts.
Financial Performance
  • Support cost improvement initiatives and process changes to improve operating costs of the Aurora facility.
Personnel
  • Provide training to site personnel (scientists, technicians, engineers, maintenance, laboratory, etc.) as needed to ensure understanding of automation systems.
Process Safety Handbook Development
  • Support the advancement of the Process Safety Handbook.
Business
  • Support ongoing needs of the business.
Education/Experience

BS degree in Engineering with a minimum of 10 years in the petrochemical industry (process control) or an AAS Technical Degree with at least 10 years in industrial electrical, instrumentation & process controls. Advanced degree or experience in industrial chemical R&D/pilot plant is a plus. Certifications in project management (PMP or equivalent) are a plus.

Skills/Competencies Technical skills
  • Understanding of control theory (PID, advanced control, SPC) and instrumentation technologies (DCS/PLC/HMI).
  • Experience configuring/troubleshooting DCS (Emerson RS3, Delta

    V; Honeywell Experion), SIS (Honeywell FSC, HIMA, Triconex, Delta V SIS), and PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
  • Experience with data acquisition/alarms (OSI PI, Process View, Vision); data analysis and AI tool familiarity; scripting (VBA, Python, Java).
  • Knowledge of ISA/IEC standards and ability to perform SIL evaluations; ability to read/modify P&IDs, loop sheets, and single line diagrams.
  • Experience with automation of computer tasks and online instrumentation (GC, IR); project lifecycle management; capital project management of ~$250k or higher.
