The City of Aurora, Illinois is accepting applications for the position of Fire Private to establish a Civil Service eligibility list.
Eligibility Requirements- Must be at least 20 years of age and under 35 years of age at the time of exam but must be at least 21 years of age and under 35 years of age at the time of appointment.
- Must be a U.S. citizen at the time of exam.
- Must possess a valid Class D Illinois driver's license or a valid out-of-state driver’s license of similar classification by the time of exam. Must possess a valid Class D Illinois driver’s license by the time of appointment and obtain a Class B non‑CDL license within 6 months of appointment.
- Must possess a high school diploma with a grade point average of 2.0 out of 4.0 or a G.E.D. with a minimum composite score of at least 401 points, or at least sixteen (16) hours of college credit with a grade point average of 2.0 out of 4.0.
- Must possess a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certification by the time of the background phase. CPAT certifications will be considered valid within one (1) year of the issuance date.
- Must possess a valid ladder climb certification by the time of the background phase. Ladder climb certifications will be considered valid within five (5) years of the issuance date.
- A subsequent polygraph and psychological examination will be required, in addition to a thorough background investigation, interview, drug screen and pre‑employment physical. Applicants will have to travel to Illinois for the various stages at their own expenses.
- The background phase will occur at different times dependent on academy dates and placement on the eligibility list.
- Tattoos and body art on the face, head, or neck are prohibited.
Post (6 mos.) probation annual salary is $98,640.90, plus a full benefit package.
How To ApplyBoth steps below must be completed by the posted deadline to be considered for the eligibility list. Please use your full legal name when completing your application and registering for the exam.
- Submit application online on the City of Aurora UKG employment site, upload all required documents at the time of application. The application with required documents must be submitted by 3:00 PM CST on January 26, 2026.
- Birth Certificate or Naturalization Certificate, if applicable.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Unofficial copy of high school transcript or G.E.D. composite score (Document must show final, cumulative G.P.A).
- Unofficial copy of college transcript with a minimum of 16 credit hours, if applicable.
- There are a limited number of attachments allowed by the system. Please be sure to only attach the documents being requested. Other pertinent items will be collected at the appropriate time in the hiring process.
- Schedule and take the video‑based job simulation multiple‑choice exam at the National Testing Network. The exam must be completed and submitted by 11:59 PM CST on January 30, 2026.
An non‑refundable base fee of $65 for the exam and additional cost for each department where you indicate you want to apply. Payments are made electronically using a credit card.
An option will be available to select the Aurora Police Department as a testing location to take the written Fire exam in‑person on selected days.

Preference points submission. Eligible applicants will be provided with the preference points form and given the opportunity to apply for preference points. Supporting documentation must be completed and submitted by 11:59 PM CST on February 22, 2026. - March 20, 2026 – Certified eligibility list will be posted online at https://(Use the "Apply for this Job" box below)..
If you are unable to pay any of the process fees including the National Testing Network exam fee and/or the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certification fee, please complete the Financial Hardship Request Form and return it to Human Resources in person or via email for consideration. You must allow 5 business days for review.
