Zoning Administrator – City of Aurora, IL Responsibilities

  • Assist in overseeing administration of the Aurora Zoning Ordinance, Sign Ordinance, Historic Preservation, and Fox Walk Overlay District.
  • Assist in coordinating and facilitating the Development Services Team (DST) meetings with developers, property owners, and City staff.
  • Assist and oversee the building permits, business registrations, and city licenses reviews for Zoning & Planning.
  • Liaison to Property Standards regarding the interpretation and enforcement of the Aurora Code of Ordinances including the Aurora Zoning Ordinance, Sign Ordinance, Historic Preservation, and Fox Walk Overlay District.
  • Assist in the dissemination of information, including written reports, mapped data, and analytic studies.
  • Coordinate responsibilities between Zoning & Planning and other agencies, and divisions/departments of the City.
  • Assist in the delegation of responsibilities and tasks.
  • Assist with the evaluation of development proposals to determine if they meet zoning requirements for the City.
  • Assist with meetings that may require participation.
  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of analytical studies.
  • Assist with overseeing the representation of the City at various functions and meetings, including hearings and appeals for non‑conformity, neighborhood/ward meetings, commissions and boards, and committee and council meetings.
  • Work with all departments/divisions primarily engaged in the development and redevelopment process.
  • Assist with formulating administrative procedures and policies.
  • Assist with providing training and assistance to staff as needed.
  • Assist in research and responding to inquiries from the public.
  • Oversee and assist in processing and evaluating all zoning permit applications and enforce the Aurora Code of Ordinances, including variances, rezonings, conditional uses, and planned developments.
  • Assist in reviewing all building permit applications for compliance with the Aurora Zoning Ordinance.
  • Oversee and assist in reviewing zoning regulations as applied to the issuance of licenses, including liquor, tobacco, hotel, mobile food unit, digital message board, digital billboard, and amusement licenses.
  • Oversee and assist in investigating complaints regarding possible violations of the Aurora Code, Zoning Ordinance, Sign Ordinance, Historic Preservation, and Fox Walk Overlay District.
  • Oversee and assist in performing on‑site inspections of building grounds to determine potential violations and confer with the public concerning remedial action.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a field related to Urban Planning plus six years of professional planning/zoning experience in a municipal/county setting.
  • Master’s Degree in a field related to Urban Planning with a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning or a related field, plus five years of professional planning/zoning experience in a municipal/county setting.
  • Master’s Degree in Urban Planning with a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning or a related field, plus four years of professional planning/zoning experience in a municipal/county setting.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must successfully pass pre‑hire requirements, including a physical, drug screen, and background check.
Salary

The salary range is $ – $, with the starting rate dependent on experience and qualifications, but in most cases no higher than the midpoint of the range.
