Major Responsibilities
- Determine appropriate image scan technique and position for patient using immobilization and support devices.
- Position patient, adjust equipment, secure immobilization and support devices as needed to perform procedures.
- Determine appropriate image technique based on anatomy and patient condition to obtain quality films for radiologists.
- Secure patient history regarding reason for prescribed test and record on appropriate form for radiologist review.
- Operate advanced ultrasound equipment and assist radiologists with specialty procedures such as liver and breast imaging.
- Adhere to all accepted safety standards and practices to ensure patient safety and quality care.
- Maintain compliance with safety standards to protect patients and staff.
- Maintain supplies and cleanliness for assigned room daily.
- Assure accuracy of exam performed and requisition.
- Perform clerical duties: maintain patient records, answer phones, schedule examinations, give instructions to patients to ensure smooth and continuous departmental services.
- Operate ultrasound equipment as required.
- Coordinate quality control: check ultrasound films for optimal quality, disseminate exams to technologists, label films according to QA standards, prepare sedation/needles as necessary, monitor inventory of supplies and linen.
- Coordinate flow of patients into and out of department following departmental procedures and transport patients as needed.
- Provide instruction and orientation to students, technologists, and new technologists; instruct technologists needing assistance with specific procedures.
- Provide in‑services to technical staff to maintain technical competence and share new information sponsored by the hospital.
- Participate in problem‑solving issues addressing patients, department operations, QA procedures, interdepartmental relationships, and employee morale; maintain positive guest relations and telephone etiquette.
- Maintain current CPR certification and ARDMS certification within one year of hire.
- Assume leadership role in absence of senior technologist to ensure continuity of department policies and procedures.
Graduate from an accredited AMA School of Sonography. One year experience as a sonographer preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities RequiredKnowledge of HIS system; basic knowledge of RIS systems; effective interpersonal skills; ability to interact with customers from all levels.
CertificationCertified by Radiologic Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) and CPR certified. New hire must be ARDMS certified within one year of hire.
Physical Requirements And Working ConditionsMust be able to make independent professional decisions for high quality patient care; high degree of technical skills; function with minimal assistance; be conscientious in practicing high quality patient care; lift and move patients; heavy lifting: lift 50 to 100 pounds occasionally, 25 to 50 pounds frequently, 10 to 20 pounds constantly; work rotating shifts any day of the week; deal with extremely ill patients;
recognize needs of various age groups; may be exposed to hazardous materials and life‑threatening diseases.
Lifting requirement for direct patient care supersedes any previous requirement: ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance; for lifts over 35 pounds, patient‑handling equipment must be used, ideally with at least one other associate.
