What you will be doing?

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for implementing the client’s Individualized Strategies under the direction of a Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional. The DSP demonstrates this through daily documentation of services provided, including recreation, leisure, and activities of daily living for each client. The DSP ensures client rights, dignity, and privacy while maintaining a clean and safe environment. The DSP may work with clients with maladaptive behaviors—including verbal and physical aggression, self‑injurious behavior, property destruction, and elopement—and may also support clients who require intensive care such as toileting, bathing, special diets, and enteral feeding.

The DSP is assigned to a primary location but must be able to work across any site assigned as determined by program needs.

Job Responsibilities
  • Maintain a team approach with clients, staff, and outside agencies.
  • Implement assigned programs from the Individual Plan or Implementation Strategy and document per program procedures.
  • Follow agency and program rules and report concerns to the immediate supervisor.
  • Plan and prepare meals following dietician‑written menus and client input.
  • Attend to clients’ self‑care needs, including toileting, dressing, bathing, grooming, shaving, and cleaning accessories.
  • Obtain and maintain medication administration authorization.
  • Assure safe conditions inside and outside the home, including housekeeping and environmental safety.
  • Perform cleaning tasks for assigned buildings and vehicles.
  • Respond to emergency situations per program and agency policies.
  • Provide transportation for clients via personal or agency vehicle.
  • Monitor clients’ medical conditions and relay information to medical appointments.
  • Attend all scheduled meetings, shifts, and trainings.
  • Assist in orientation and training of new staff.
  • Plan and implement community and in‑house activities.
  • Conduct monthly client input meetings and facilitate Home and Community Based Settings Rules training.
  • Follow verbal and written directions with minimal supervision.
  • Provide independent building coverage as required by program needs.
  • Work scheduled hours at various locations as determined by client and program needs.
  • Complete required training on or before due dates to meet licensing and program requirements.
  • Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality as defined by program guidelines.
  • Perform reasonable related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain all written documentation required for licensing and program requirements.
  • Apply Home and Community Based Settings Rules principles to client, family, and stakeholder interactions.
  • Know all applicable regulations (CARF, DMH, DHS, DPH, etc.).

Education
  • High School Diploma or GED.
License/Certifications
  • CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) or Autism Certificate desired.
Experience
  • Experience working with developmentally disabled adults preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Climb stairs daily.
  • No medical restrictions prohibiting lifting/transfer or behavioral program implementation.
  • Push, pull, reach, stoop/bend, and use step stool daily.
  • Perform daily housekeeping tasks and assist clients in independent living skills.
  • Assist clients in getting in/out of van, bathtub, shower, or bed.
  • Implement behavior support strategies and respond to emergency behavioral issues.
