Overview
Water Utility Worker - Transmission & Distribution at City of Aurora. This posting covers multiple vacancies within the Aurora Water Operations and Maintenance divisions and describes manual labor duties related to water delivery systems including transmission & distribution and pumping functions.
Responsibilities- The Water Utility Worker in the Transmission and Distribution section performs repair and maintenance on waterline street valves, pressure control valves, air relief valves, fire hydrants, and the potable, raw water and reuse delivery systems. Work occurs in the street for valve maintenance, in confined spaces (vaults) for control valves and air relief valves, and off the side of roads for hydrants and raw water.
This is manual labor intensive with overtime being minimal except for snow removal and occasional emergency operations. Average overtime in this section is about 30 hours per year. - The Pumping section duties include reporting to a central location each morning, driving to remote sites, working with at least one partner, and performing tasks across the distribution, collection, raw, potable, reuse, and stormwater systems as well as raw sewage. Tasks include pump and motor oil changes, inspections, repairs, removing foreign objects, rebuilding, valve operation, cleaning/checking valves, removing objects from check valves, rebuilding, cleaning and washing wet wells, washing and chlorinating storage tanks, and climbing water storage tanks up to 40 feet with safety equipment.
Mandatory participation in the Emergency Standby Rotation (approximately every 6 weeks) and snow removal program. Maintain CDL certification after training. - All divisions perform general duties: loading/unloading tools, overtime expectations, repair and replacement activities, performing routine equipment maintenance, assisting with installation, repair, testing and maintenance of water lines, sewer lines, stormwater lines, channels and structures, large water meters, valves, hydrants, and other equipment; use of hand tools, shovels, jackhammers, and power tools; potential on-call shifts and snow removal support; servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machinery and equipment.
- Education:
High School Diploma or GED required - Experience:
1 year of work experience related to manual labor preferred - Abilities: ability to perform manual labor for extended periods; ability to understand oral and written instructions; ability to operate or receive training on maintenance and construction equipment; ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds repetitively; ability to work overtime, be on call, and respond within 45 minutes
- Skills:
attention to detail; ability to use ground maintenance equipment and hand tools - Licenses/Certificates:
State-issued driver's license with good driving history; current Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain a Colorado CDL within 6 months of hire - Physical Demands: heavy physical work; frequent lifting and carrying heavy objects; extensive walking/standing; climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing/pulling; good hand/eye and hand/foot coordination; vision/hearing requirements
- Work Environment: outdoors in all weather with noise, dust, odors, and fumes; some work in trenches, confined spaces, and high-traffic areas
