Job SummaryThe PRN Staff Radiation Therapist in the Radiation Oncology Department applies ionizing radiation to a diverse population of patients in accordance with the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist. They must be capable of operating radiation‑producing equipment utilizing radiation safety measures and be able to perform a series of complex and precise technical procedures.
Core Responsibilities- Participate in Quality Control monitoring.
- Deliver consistent precise therapy to a designated treatment area.
- Demonstrate skill in patient assessment, performing procedures and giving specialty care, considering patient age and adopting appropriate care for adolescents, adults and geriatrics.
- Document appropriately in Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Show willingness to perform additional tasks and give assistance when necessary.
- Recognize personal limitations or needs and seek assistance as required.
- Report adverse reactions to the physician immediately and follow policy and procedure (P/P) for documentation.
- Educate patient/family on expected side effects and on the use of blocks, wedges and other treatment aids.
- Follow P/P to ensure precise treatment per physician prescription and per physicist’s instruction in chart or computer.
- Simulate new patients or new treatment fields with no errors and according to physician’s written order in EMR.
- Schedule patients appropriately and notify them of any changes prior to making changes.
- Assess patient mobility and manage accordingly, checking EMR for fall precautions.
- Wear radiation safety badges at all times and practice universal precautions.
- Participate in daily warm‑up procedures to ensure output is within tolerances.
- Advise manager of any discrepancies or any material item that needs replacing or fixing as soon as possible.
- Do other tasks as assigned and participate in on‑call rotation.
- Act as a student clinical instructor with both RTT and RTR students, evaluating and giving feedback to students and the Clinical Advisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Minimum Education
- Associate’s Degree from an accredited Radiation Therapy program.
- Graduate from an accredited Radiologic Technology School (JRCERT).
- All certifications required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
- ARRT‑T – ARRT Radiation Therapy.
- BLS – Basic Life Support or ARC‑BLS – American Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS‑I – Basic Life Support Instructor.
- Minimum 1 year experience in Radiation Therapy (including clinicals).
- Demonstrates ability to treat/simulate patients.
