Job Summary

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist Pain Management is responsible for providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care to patients through clinical services, formulary management, development of policies and procedures, and integrated drug distribution. The incumbent will precept pharmacy students and residents, orient new staff pharmacists, and may be responsible for providing recommendations regarding patient care activities, pharmacokinetics, nutrition support, or other medication regimens as prescribed by the provider.

  • Provide recommendations and/or assume responsibility for pain‑management related activities or other medication regimens as prescribed by physician.
  • Document clinical interventions on an ongoing basis.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of distributive responsibilities, including computer functions.
  • Manage and provide recommendations for pain medications or other medication regimens as prescribed by the provider.
  • Round with interdisciplinary teams where applicable.
  • Provide on‑call clinical pharmacy services as needed.
  • Perform medication‑management activities as outlined per Wellstar policies.
  • Provide drug information when needed or requested.
  • Develop and provide educational programs/ in‑services for healthcare practitioners and patients as required.
  • Participate as a preceptor/instructor for students from accredited colleges/schools of pharmacy and for the Pharmacy Residency Program where applicable.
  • Assist in developing drug protocols.
  • Serve on assigned committees, including the Wellstar Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee and other system or facility‑specific committees.
  • Identify target medications/therapies, develop criteria, and implement data collection for Medication Use Evaluations (MUE) and other pain‑management–related studies/initiatives.
  • Tabulate and present completed MUE data to the P&T Committee.
  • Assist in formulary maintenance by critiquing new entities, comparing medication classes, and developing therapeutic interchanges where applicable.
  • Assist in preparing for and maintaining compliance with regulatory agency standards/requirements (e.g., The Joint Commission).
  • Monitor quality metrics related to pain‑management patients and develop improvement strategies as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required

Minimum Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college of pharmacy.
  • Doctorate from an accredited college of pharmacy.
Required Minimum Licenses and Certifications
  • RPH – Registered Pharmacist (all certifications required upon hire unless otherwise stated).
Additional Licenses and Certifications
  • Licensed by, and in good standing with, the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy or ability to obtain a Georgia State Board of Pharmacy license within 6 months of hire.
  • Board Certification (e.g., BCPS, BCGP, etc.) required.
  • Preferred:
    Specialty credentialing such as Certified Pain Educator.
Required Minimum Experience
  • Minimum 3 years clinical experience or completion of a PGY‑1 residency.
  • Minimum 2 years clinical pharmacy experience in Pain Management/Palliative Care or completion of a PGY‑2 Pain Management/Palliative Care residency (preferred).
  • Experience with substance use disorder, geriatrics, and/or oncology (preferred).
  • Experience with nutrition support, anticoagulation management, and pharmacokinetics (preferred).
Required Minimum Skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • High level of computer proficiency, especially with Epic, Microsoft Office, and Thera Doc.
  • Capable of preparing and delivering presentations.
  • Strong organizational skills.
