Job SummaryThe RN OP burn, wound, and hyperbaric clinical nurse is a proactive member of an interdisciplinary team of licensed and unlicensed team members who ensure that patients, families, and significant others receive individualized, high‑quality, safe patient care. The RN functions in a clinical environment under the direction of the Nurse Manager and other leaders and is supported through the Well Star shared governance model.
Role specific competencies, responsibilities, and practice are guided by the Well Star Professional Practice Model, 5-Star Nursing. The RN assesses and provides care to burn and wound patients throughout the shift as well as assisting the Hyperbaric Tech in the event of an emergency and performing initial risk assessments.
The RN performs the Nursing Process (assessment; diagnosis; identification of outcomes; planning; implementation and evaluation) for Burn, Wound and HBO patients using evidence‑based practice, analytical/critical thinking, and ensuring individualized care. The RN coordinates care through effective partnerships, recognizing that caring is central to achieving optimal outcomes. The RN provides relationship‑based, patient‑centered care that is consistent with population specific characteristics, adapting services to reflect cultural diversity, always partnering with the patient and significant others (as appropriate) to keep the patient updated and keep goals focused on the plan of care.
The RN practices current clinical standards with safety and quality focus. When performing duties in the outpatient Hyperbaric Unit, the RN demonstrates knowledge of Healing Strategies for wound care, the role of HBO therapy, and approved clinical indications and treatment protocols. Under the program manager’s direction, the RN intervenes in adverse reactions following established protocols, performs ordered treatments including vital signs, blood sugars, and emergency procedures within scope.
The RN coordinates delivery and documentation of safe, quality patient care promoting a professional delivery model, inclusive interdisciplinary communication, timely documentation, fiscal responsibility, and participation in performance improvement, research utilization, shared governance, professional development, evidence‑based practice, and adherence to policies, standards, and legal/regulatory requirements. The RN engages in continuous professional competency assessment, supports workforce development, and collaborates in protocol development and resource utilization to achieve best practice outcomes.
Minimum Education
- Associate’s Nursing or Diploma (RN) Nursing
or Bachelor’s Nursing – Preferred
- BLS – Basic Life Support or ARC-BLS – American Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS-I – Basic Life Support – Instructor
- RN – Registered Nurse (Single State) or RN-COMPACT – RN – Multi‑state Compact
- ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or ARC-ALS – American Red Cross Advanced Life Support or ACLS-I – ACLS – Instructor or ACLS-P – ACLS‑Provisional (180 Days) within 180 Days
- ABLS – Advanced Burn Life Support or ABLS-P – Advanced Burn Life Support Provisional (180 Days) within 180 Days
PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support Upon Hire Preferred
PALS-P – PALS‑Provisional (180 Days) within 180 Days Preferred
Minimum 2 years nursing experience in ambulatory or acute care setting required.
Required Minimum SkillsComputer/data entry experience. Ability to communicate with various members of the healthcare team. Basic use of Excel, Word, and general computer operational knowledge. Epic and 3M experience preferred.
