Position: SOS Information Specialist IV (JP26-019) - Executive

Overview

Performs advanced (senior-level) and, at times, highly complex informational and communications work. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.

Responsibilities
  • 35% - Internal & External Communications Management
    Develops and manages communication strategies and content to ensure consistent, timely, and accurate messaging to both internal and external audiences. Drafts, edits, and distributes newsletters, announcements, and other communications in alignment with agency goals and leadership direction. Serves as a communications resource for agency leadership and staff, providing guidance on tone, style, and message clarity. Coordinates with divisions to ensure agency-wide communication materials are accurate, accessible, and aligned with strategic priorities.
  • 25% - Content Creation & Editorial Oversight
    Researches, writes, and edits content for correspondence, presentations, website copy, and reports. Reviews and proofs materials for grammar, readability, and consistency with agency branding and editorial standards. Helps create and update style and branding guides as needed. Collaborates with subject-matter experts to translate complex, technical information into plain language suitable for various audiences. Ensures all communications comply with accessibility and public information standards.
  • 15% - Digital Communication Administration
    Utilizes the agency’s internal and external email distribution systems, ensuring accurate list maintenance and compliance with applicable privacy and communication policies. Drafts and schedules agency-wide and stakeholder-specific broadcast messages, coordinating timing and content with leadership. Monitors engagement analytics (e.g., open rates, click-throughs) to assess communication effectiveness and recommend improvements. Supports ongoing management of the agency’s intranet and other digital communication platforms as assigned.
  • 15% - Stakeholder and Media Communications Support
    Supports the Director of Communications in preparing materials, correspondence, and updates for key stakeholders. Helps track and manage media inquiries. Assists in developing and implementing communication plans that strengthen the agency’s visibility and reputation.
  • 5% - Marginal Job Duties
    Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with Agency, Division, and Department rules, regulations, and procedures.
Qualifications
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in journalism, public relations, advertising, communications, or a related field.
  • Experience: Experience in journalism, public relations, public information, communications, media relations, or social media work.
  • Acceptable Substitutions:

    Education:

    One additional year of informational and communications related experience may substitute for 30 semester credit hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 120 semester hours.

    Experience:

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree (or equivalent) may substitute for one year of required experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Experience with content management systems, intranet publishing, and/or digital accessibility remediation tools. Experience communicating effectively, both written and verbal, in a professional work environment in English and Spanish.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Knowledge of agency functions, policies, and procedures; knowledge of news, communication, and social media platforms; editing, design principles, plain language and accessibility standards; audience engagement strategies and analytics; legislative and governmental communication protocols.
    Skills in editorial and design practices; use of computer and applicable software; writing and editing across multiple formats and tones; establishing collaborative working relationships; managing large-scale email or subscription distribution systems.
