Overview
The Museum Curator is a full-time position reporting to the Director and is responsible for the care, preservation, and interpretation of objects of historical and aesthetic significance in the Mayer Museum at Angelo State University. The Curator collaborates with academic departments, including History, Visual and Performing Arts, as well as other campus entities, to develop exhibitions and educational programs that support the University’s mission.
TypicalDuties/Job Duties
- Exhibit design, development, and construction
- Develop and implement educational programs
- Seeks and prepares funding proposals in conjunction with Director
- Catalogue and display material
- Develop and maintain exhibit schedule
- Supervise volunteers, docents, and interns among others
- Identify and record items
- Other duties as assigned
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge
- Museum operations, procedures, and industry best practices
- Historical research methods and techniques
- Exhibition planning, including artist contracts, logistics, and promotion
- Social media platforms and print advertising strategies for exhibitions
- Strong oral and written communication
- Effective interpersonal skills for collaborating with staff, artists, and the public
- Public speaking and presenting museum-related content to diverse audiences
- Conduct thorough historical research and apply findings effectively
- Organize and manage multiple tasks accurately and efficiently
- Complete projects requiring close attention to detail
- Coordinate artist contracts, exhibition schedules, and promotional efforts
- Possession of an MA or MS in museum studies or related field.
- Museum, archival, or closely related experience required.
