The Externship Coordinator coordinates externship programs, cultivate partnerships with potential externship sites, maintains a database of externship opportunities and resources, and supervises externship training. This position is responsible for guiding students throughout their externship experience to preparing them to make the transition from classroom to externship to placement. This position partners with the career services and education staff to support successful outcomes for Southern Careers Institute’s students in the job market.

  • Plan and deploy marketing strategies to identify and cultivate a diverse group of potential externship sites in various industries and sectors;
  • Set the standard for professional dress;
  • Locate new externship sites, maintain contact with employers, and coordinate placements;
  • Maintain documentation in Student Administrative System and provide weekly updates on the following:
    Site contacts, affiliation agreements, site requests, student contacts, travel records, externship to placement conversion ratio;
  • Supervise all externship initiatives, and expedite resolution of student extern issues;
  • Collaborate with campus staff and faculty to resolve student concerns with externship placement;
  • Coordinate an externship referral program;
  • Interview students to determine interests, skills, strengths, and opportunities;
  • Advise students on externship choices;
  • Refer students for additional training and experience, when indicated;
  • Establish and maintain a professional relationship with students at the start of their programs by presenting externship overview during new student orientation;
  • Conduct externship orientation meetings and/or workshops with each student;
  • Assign students to externship experiences that match skill sets by coordinating with education and career services staff;
  • Conduct weekly site visits for the express purpose of enhancing existing relationships with employers / sites and establishing new partnership opportunities;
  • Communicate externship site requirements to students prior to externship and ensure all requirements are met before externship commences;
  • Determine skill deficiencies and coordinate with directors of career services and education to create remediation plans for affected student;
  • Facilitate the student transition from class work, to externship, to graduate in anticipation of job search and employment;
  • Supervise externship training in compliance with Accreditation, Education Department, and company policies and regulations;
  • Coordinate and attend Job / Career Fairs, and externship site events;
  • Participate in campus and off-campus events, including graduation and marketing events;
  • Oversee externship placement and monitor/track student’s externship progress and attendance and document in student database;
  • Conduct exit interviews with all students upon completion of their externship;
  • Secure all evaluations from externship sites and students;
  • Maintain externship to placement conversion ratios of 40% or higher;
  • Plan and conduct “Level Up” workshops on career topics to help prepare students with employment skills and the confidence to enter the work force;
  • Conduct exit interviews with all students upon completion of program;
  • Source Job orders and connect graduates to employers;
  • Provide career guidance, support, information and skills training;
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
