The Academic Advisor supports new and continuing students enrolled at Huston-Tillotson University by providing comprehensive academic advising throughout their educational journey. Serving as a key liaison between students and the university, the advisor ensures clear communication of academic policies, degree requirements, and support services to promote student success and retention.
The Academic Advisor also serves as a liaison to students in transition to their sophomore year, junior year and senior year.
TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic Student Support & Guidance
- Provide one-on-one academic advising to help students select courses, declare majors/minors, and
- develop academic plans aligned with career goals.
- Assist students in understanding degree requirements, academic policies, and university procedures.
- Support students in exploring career paths, graduate school opportunities, and experiential learning
- (internships, study abroad, research).
- Identify at-risk students and connect them with tutoring, mentoring, or other academic support resources
- and working collaboratively with the Retention Coordinator.
- Encourage student engagement in campus life and leadership opportunities.
- Assist in coordinating and facilitating Student Success Workshops.
- Monitor students' academic progress through advising notes, degree audits, and academic standing
- reports.
- Guide students through processes such as registration, course withdrawals, changes of major, and
- petitions.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with FERPA.
- Assist students with probation, suspension, and reinstatement procedures, ensuring they understand
- requirements for academic success.
- Participate in orientation, retention, and student success initiatives.
- Bachelor's degree required;
Master's degree preferred
- Knowledge of SEVIS regulations, immigration processes, and international student support
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills;
Experience in curriculum design
- This position reports to the Director of Center for Academic Excellence
- $45,000 annually, plus benefits!
- This position is partially funded through a grant. Continued employment is contingent on continuous funding.
- Full-time; in-person.

The University is an independent, liberal arts, church-related, historically black institution located on a 23-acre tree-lined campus near downtown Austin, Texas. Undergraduate, four-year degrees in business, education, the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences are awarded.
