Transportation Engineer III, IV, or V:
Bridge Department (Austin District)
Position performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in planning, project development, design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
EssentialDuties
- Design highly complex bridge projects and perform specialized design.
- Inspect structures for impact damage and construction problems and design emergency shoring to prevent collapse of damaged structures.
- Perform inspections, structural evaluations and analyses of bridges and related structures that have appraisal and condition ratings or are recommended for closure.
- Rate and monitor load‑carrying capacities of bridges.
- Recommend bridge replacement, rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.
- Review shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Coordinate and monitor consultant contracts related to projects.
- Maintain a critical bridge list and coordinate with the Bridge Division, area engineers and other district staff on critical findings involving state‑maintained bridges to have them posted, repaired or closed to the traveling public.
- Recommend prioritization of bridge replacement, rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.
- Ensure compliance with National Bridge Inspection Standards.
- Assist district with bridge inspection‑related matters.
- Monitor contract performance, evaluate contract deliverables, review billing documentation, monitor the consultant's compliance with the terms of the contract, and prepare and deliver a written evaluation of the consultant's performance.
- Perform highly complex structural analysis of bridge designs.
- Perform inspections, structural evaluations and analyses of bridges and related structures that have appraisal and condition ratings or are recommended for closure.
- Perform and coordinate the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions.
- Perform highly advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and transportation planning studies.
- Education
:
Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science. Bachelor’s or higher degree accepted by TX PELS. - Experience
: - Transportation Engineer III – 6 years in transportation engineering or related engineering experience.
- Transportation Engineer IV – 7 years in transportation engineering or related engineering experience.
- Transportation Engineer V – 8 years in transportation engineering or related engineering experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Related graduate‑level education may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.)
- Licenses and Certifications
:- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Licensed Professional Engineer.
- Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in Texas, must meet Texas licensing requirements within six months of hire and sign an agreement to that effect.
