Overview
Structural Materials Engineer III, IV, or V – TxDOT Materials and Tests Division (MTD Division). The role provides engineering support to field inspection teams across Texas, ensuring quality assurance of prestressed concrete bridges, structural steel bridge members, and other structural components. The engineer develops quality assurance programs, represents MTD at industry meetings, and collaborates with district and division personnel on material and fabrication requirements.
Responsibilities- Support TxDOT’s 25 districts by ensuring structural materials comply with specifications and quality assurance standards.
- Conduct on‑site engineering reviews, analyses, tests, and provide technical support to field inspection personnel.
- Investigate material failures or fabrication problems; analyze test data and determine causes of failing materials.
- Monitor contractor compliance with plans and specifications and resolve differences between contractors and inspectors.
- Write reports, develop specifications and test procedures, and assist in developing and monitoring budgets.
- Develop and recommend modifications for continual improvement to existing program responsibilities.
- Develop training courses and materials; review fabricator shop drawings for bridges and related structures.
- Support Standard Operating Procedures for project schedules, resource and budget management, and quality performance measurements.
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science (acceptable by TX PELS).
- Experience: 6–8 years engineering or transportation engineering experience (full‑time or prorated part‑time) with optional graduate‑level substitution on a year‑per‑year basis.

Valid driver’s license; licensed professional engineer in Texas or other U.S. states obligated to obtain a Texas license within six months of hire. - Technical

Standards and specifications for bridges and transportation structures; construction engineering policies; testing methods; program/project planning; statistical analysis; contract development and oversight; risk management; research and analysis methodologies; and proficiency in preparing technical reports and presentations.

Tasks include prolonged walking, standing, and operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment. Employees may be exposed to highway traffic, environmental conditions, noise, and possibly hazardous materials. A pre‑employment physical and drug test is required.
