Position: Transportation Engineer III, or IV - Design Support - Design Division - Austin, TX

Transportation Engineer III / IV – Design Support – Design Division – Austin, TX

Position located in Austin, TX within the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Design Division. This role involves advanced and complex transportation engineering across planning, project development, design, construction, traffic operations, and maintenance. The responsibilities differ between Engineering III and Engineering IV levels.

Essential Duties Transportation Engineer III
  • Performs advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements modifications for continual improvement of existing programs of responsibility.
  • Interprets manuals and required guidelines for traffic operations.
  • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
  • Serves as a lead worker and related tasks.
  • Monitors consultant progress, checks invoices, prepares supplemental agreements.
  • Negotiates fees, explains scope of work, and monitors consultant design contracts.
  • Coordinates review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submissions, special specifications, or special provisions.
  • Prepares correspondence and detailed engineering surveys.
  • Provides design engineering support for districts in project development.
  • Represents the district/division at technical meetings.
  • Leads and trains engineering staff and professional staff.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transportation Engineer IV
  • Develops short‑term and long‑term goals and coordinates planning activities and resources to meet goals.
  • Performs highly advanced and complex engineering design work, including layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts.
  • Performs advanced planning work such as plan review and calculations.
  • Serves as a project manager overseeing consultants performing advanced engineering work.
  • Acts in an advisory capacity on administrative, technical, regulatory, and engineering aspects.
  • Assesses and reports actual project progress versus planned progress to determine trends and variances for complex projects.
  • Evaluates the performance of new transportation products.
  • Negotiates fees and budgets, develops and negotiates scopes of work, contract work schedules, and other contract agreements.
  • Updates, reviews, monitors, and reviews requests for changes to plans, manuals, and standard sheets.
  • Writes reports and specifications.
  • All responsibilities of Transportation Engineer III.
Minimum Qualifications Transportation Engineer III
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or a related science degree accepted by TX PELS.
  • Experience: 6 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience; full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalence acceptable; graduate education may substitute experience on a year‑per‑year basis.

    Certifications:

    Valid driver’s license, Texas Licensed Professional Engineer, Safety Impact Certificate.
Transportation Engineer IV
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or a related science degree accepted by TX PELS.
  • Experience: 7 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience; full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalence acceptable; graduate education may substitute experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
  • Licenses &

    Certifications:

    Valid driver’s license, Texas Licensed Professional Engineer, Safety Impact Certificate; professional engineers licensed in another U.S. state must obtain a Texas license within six months of hire and sign an agreement.

  • Knowledge of geometric design relationships, transportation principles, hydrology, environmental engineering, and applicable governmental laws and regulations.
  • Expert skill in applying engineering principles, practices, and methods.
