Position SummaryThe Molding & Tooling Design Engineer will play a critical role in the launch and ongoing success of Xinquan’s U.S. manufacturing operations. This position is responsible for the design, development, validation, and optimization of injection molding tools and molded components used in automotive interior and exterior trim systems.
As a founding engineer at our Austin facility, this role will collaborate closely with global tooling teams, suppliers, and cross-functional departments to ensure tooling designs meet quality, cost, delivery, and performance requirements while supporting high-volume production.
Key Responsibilities:Tooling & Mold Design
- Design and review injection molding tools for automotive plastic components, including interior and exterior trim systems.
- Collaborate with global engineering teams and tool shops to develop new molds, tool modifications, and engineering changes.
- Evaluate mold flow analysis, cooling layouts, gating, venting, and parting line strategies to optimize part quality and cycle time.
- Support tooling tryouts, validation runs, and production launches.
- Partner with molding engineers and production teams to troubleshoot tooling and molding issues (flash, short shots, warpage, surface defects).
- Support PPAP, APQP, and launch readiness activities.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance tool performance, reduce downtime, and extend tool life.
- Support preventative maintenance strategies and tooling repair activities.
- Coordinate with internal teams and external toolmakers to ensure projects meet cost, timing, and quality expectations.
- Review tool design proposals, technical drawings, and specifications from suppliers.
- Support sourcing and localization efforts for tooling in the U.S. when applicable.
- Ensure tooling and molded components comply with customer requirements, industry standards, and internal specifications.
- Support dimensional reviews, capability studies, and corrective action investigations.
- Maintain engineering documentation, design records, and change control processes.
- Contribute to the development of engineering standards, tooling best practices, and operating procedures for the U.S. facility.
- Serve as a technical subject-matter expert during plant startup and ramp-up phases.
- Actively participate in building a strong safety culture and high-performance engineering team.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Plastics Engineering, or related field.
- 3–7+ years of experience in injection molding and tooling design within an automotive manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of plastic materials, mold construction, and injection molding processes.
- Experience supporting tooling development from concept through production launch.
- Ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings and GD&T.
- Experience with automotive interior or exterior trim components.
- Familiarity with APQP, PPAP, and IATF 16949 requirements.
- Experience working with global engineering teams, particularly Asia-based suppliers.
