Structural Materials Engineer III, IV, or V – MTD Division

Essential Duties
  • Assist district and division personnel on material and/or fabrication requirements and advise on appropriate material and/or fabrication application and acceptability.
  • Travel to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.
  • Investigate material failures or fabrication problems; review test data and assist in determining cause of failing materials.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Represent the district/division at various meetings.
  • Resolve differences between contractors and inspectors.
  • Write reports, specifications and test procedures.
  • Assist in developing and/or monitoring budgets.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement modifications as necessary for continual improvement to existing program of responsibility.
  • Develop training courses and/or materials.
  • Review shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.
  • Train engineering staff.
  • Update, review, monitor, and/or review requests for changes to plans, manuals and/or standard sheets.
  • Perform data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments, and/or plan development.
  • Review and support Standard Operating Procedures for maintaining and archiving project schedules; managing resources; managing budgets; managing project changes; and managing quality performance measurements.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities for Transportation Engineer IV
  • Develop short-term and long-term goals and coordinate planning activities and resources required to meet goals.
  • Formulate, develop and/or monitor budgets and financial information.
  • Monitor contract performance, evaluate contract deliverables, review billing documentation, monitor consultant compliance with contract terms, and/or prepare and deliver written evaluations of consultant performance.
  • Perform, review, and monitor detailed investigations, data collection, analyses and coordination of bridge-related research; recommend cost-effective project level design for new, rehabilitated and reconstructed bridges.
Additional Responsibilities for Transportation Engineer V
  • Develop and support implementation activities for new methods, procedures, and technologies.
  • Provide technical information and guidance regarding innovative and experimental technologies to departmental personnel.
  • Review and provide guidance on research project reports and other deliverables.
  • Support the Technical Assistance Panel for assigned Research Management Committee.
Minimum Qualifications Transportation Engineer III
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science. A higher degree is recognized by TX PELS.
  • Experience: 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted at a year‑per‑year basis.
Transportation Engineer IV
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science. A higher degree is recognized by TX PELS.
  • Experience: 7 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted at a year‑per‑year basis.
Transportation Engineer V
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science. A higher degree is recognized by TX PELS.
  • Experience: 8 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted at a year‑per‑year basis.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license. Position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE). For PEs not currently licensed in Texas, must meet Texas Engineering Practices Act requirements, obtain Texas PE license within six months of hire, and sign an agreement.
