Oversees inspection of construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors perform structural repairs and build bridges and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications. This individual will act as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution, training, and support statewide oversight activities for bridge construction and maintenance projects. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for final approval of all engineering-related work.

Work requires contact with private entities to include contractors in support of district operations. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties
  • Ensures contractors build bridges and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Performs engineering‑related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities.
  • Interprets plans and specifications and negotiates with producers and suppliers to resolve differences.
  • Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
  • Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Drives/travels to geographically separated fabrication plants/project sites to monitor program status; perform unannounced inspection of operations, and problem resolution.
  • Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
  • Mentors and develops technical employees in test and inspection procedures and material specifications.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Construction Inspector IV:
Salary Group B21, $54,278 - $87,046

7 YEARS in construction, maintenance and repairs, construction inspection, engineering support, materials or process inspection, or related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent)

Construction Inspector V:
Salary Group B22, $57,614 - $93,138

8 YEARS in construction, maintenance and repairs, construction inspection, engineering support, materials or process inspection, or related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent)

Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Required to wear protective gear such as respirators, hard hats or other devices.
  • Medium work:
    Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Climbing – ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
  • Balancing, walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Crouching‐bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine.
  • Standing – prolonged periods of time.
  • Walking – moving on foot to accomplish tasks (long distance/from one work site to another).
  • Lifting – raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position.
  • Talking – expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
  • Visual acuity – determine work quality/make general observations of facilities or structures.

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing. Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize ‘medical marijuana’ under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
  • For Bridge Inspection:
    Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on Bridge Inspector's training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within one (1) year of date of hire.
