Overview
Transportation Engineer II/III/IV - Alternative Delivery Division. Join TxDOT’s Alternative Delivery Division as a Transportation Engineer, where you ll play a pivotal role in overseeing the planning, design, construction, and maintenance phases of design-build (DB) and comprehensive development agreement (CDA) projects. This position is based at TxDOT s Stassney Campus in Austin and performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas to include design, construction, materials, and/or maintenance for the Alternative Delivery Division s design-build program as part of the Implementation and Maintenance Section.
Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.
- Acts as a liaison with divisions, MPOs, cities, counties and other governmental entities concerning traffic management and/or traffic safety projects.
- Acts in an advisory capacity on administrative, technical, regulatory and engineering aspects of transportation.
- Analyzes and assists in the resolution of contract problems and disputes.
- Coordinates and/or monitors assigned projects/programs/plans.
- Coordinates maintenance matters with Area Engineers.
- Develops and/or reviews engineering related documents, correspondence, reports and remediation plans.
- Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and provide technical support.
- Interprets maintenance standards, rules, methods, procedures, practices and policies.
- Leads/Trains professional and administrative staff.
- Monitors consultants progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.
- Monitors contractors compliance with plans and specifications.
- Reviews shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.
Minimum Qualifications: Education (All levels):
Bachelor s degree in engineering or related science (bachelor s or higher degree accepted by TX PELS).
Experience:
- Transportation Engineer II: 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
- Transportation Engineer III: 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
- Transportation Engineer IV: 7 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
(Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent. Related graduate-level education may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.)
Licenses and
Certifications:
- Valid driver s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Licensed Professional Engineer*
- Professional engineers licensed in another state must meet Texas license requirements within six months of hire and sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
Transportation Engineer II — Considerable knowledge of:
- Construction engineering policies and procedures
- Pavement maintenance
- Program/project planning, development, and management methodologies
- Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements
- Risk analysis procedures and methods
- Contract development and oversight
- Applicable laws, rules, and regulations

Transportation Engineer III — Includes all II competencies plus:
- Assess actual project progress versus planned progress for complex projects
- Makes presentations and represents TxDOT
- Oversees construction and audit records
- Reviews change orders, supplemental agreements, and extra work orders
