Transportation Engineer I

Performs transportation engineering work and data analyst tasks utilizing TxDOT’s Bridge Asset Management software (AASHTOWare BrM). Performs statistical analysis, data visualization, data preparation, data quality control, and bridge lifecycle cost analysis used for bridge repair and bridge replacement recommendations. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities.

Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Transportation Engineer II

Performs complex transportation engineering work and data analyst tasks utilizing TxDOT’s Bridge Asset Management software (AASHTOWare BrM). Performs statistical analysis, data visualization, data preparation, data quality control, and bridge lifecycle cost analysis used for bridge repair and bridge replacement recommendations. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities.

The employee works independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the group leader and supervisor.

Transportation Engineer III

Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work and data analyst tasks utilizing TxDOT’s Bridge Asset Management software (ASSHTOWare BrM). Performs statistical analysis, data visualization, data preparation, data quality control, and bridge lifecycle cost analysis used for bridge repair and bridge replacement recommendations. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities.

Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties Transportation Engineer I
  • Answers technical and policy questions related to bridge inspection and maintains bridge inspection data; analyzes data and provides summaries.
  • Ensures compliance with National Bridge Inspection Standards.
  • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
  • Performs data collection, evaluation, analyses, studies, investigations, forecasts and/or plan development associated with facility issues.
  • Performs engineering analysis of statewide Bridge conditions and develops reports on Bridge conditions.
  • Recommends bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.
  • Represents the district/division at various meetings.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transportation Engineer II
  • All of the above.
  • Assists districts with bridge inspection-related matters.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements modifications as necessary for continual improvement to existing program of responsibility.
  • Develops standards in conjunction with TxDOT divisions and districts and the Federal Highway Administration and ensures compliance with National Bridge Inspection Standards.
Transportation Engineer III
  • All of the above.
  • Performs data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments, and/or plan development.
  • Recommends bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.
  • Trains engineering staff.
Minimum Qualifications Education

• Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science; bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience Transportation Engineer I

4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent). Related graduate‑level education may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.

Transportation Engineer II

5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent). Related graduate‑level education may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
