Controller (Salary range: $140K-150K + stock options)
Sage Search Partners is seeking a Controller for a fast-growing technology company headquartered in Austin, TX. The position is remote‑first, with onsite collaboration in Austin approximately twice per month. In this hands‑on role, you’ll own core accounting operations and reporting, stand up scalable processes and controls, and partner with leadership on cash, runway, budgeting, and board/investor readiness.
In addition to being an active CPA with Big 4 training (3–4+ years), the ideal candidate brings rigorous GAAP close experience, a builder’s mindset in early‑stage environments, and the ability to juggle multi‑entity activity while communicating at a board‑ready level; exposure to SaaS/technology industries is a plus. Responsibilities- Establish and maintain accounting policies, internal controls, and a fit‑for‑purpose chart of accounts; ensure clear audit trails across accounting, payroll, spend, and equity systems.
- Own monthly close end‑to‑end (reconciliations, accruals, revenue/COGS, prepaids/deferreds) and deliver GAAP‑clean financials.
- Build and evolve the management/board reporting package; maintain an audit‑ready data room.
- Drive cash management: forecasting, AP/AR cadence, vendor terms, spend control, and budget vs. actuals; monitor burn and runway.
- Coordinate multi‑entity and intercompany activity, including eliminations and (if applicable) FX considerations.
- Partner with the external startup CPA on tax and compliance (sales/use, franchise, 1099s, annual filings) and maintain registrations.
- Collaborate with PEO/payroll on benefits and payroll approvals; support equity administration.
- Support investor updates, fundraising diligence, and board meeting preparation.
- Active CPA with Big 4 background and a total of at least 4+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Proven, hands‑on GAAP close discipline and strong Excel skills; comfortable implementing modern finance tools and workflows.
- Early‑stage/startup mindset with excellent multitasking and concise, executive‑level communication.
- Preferred:
Familiarity with SaaS environments; working knowledge of ASC 606 (revenue) and ASC 718 (equity). - Nice to have: exposure to R&D credits and dual‑use/government work streams;
Austin‑area presence strongly preferred (hybrid), though remote can be considered for the right profile.
