Salary: $58,349.50 per year in the entry level position; promotional paths include Step 1 salary of $60,099.99 per year
, Senior Calls at $62,936.41 per year
. Experienced officers can earn higher base pay and may qualify for Senior level positions based on years of service and license level.
Specialized units are available for additional experience and training.
Duties And Responsibilities- Assist Post Officers and perform duties away from the post to ensure smooth operation of the building/section.
- Procure supplies, deliver paperwork, and respond to assistance calls.
- Support mail, commissary, laundry, and related activities.
- Assist with inmate searches, cell searches, and inmate counts; update and print count sheets daily.
- Assist with meal distribution and resolve inmate requests and complaints.
- Maintain cleanliness, security, and maintenance of the building and grounds.
- Conduct cleanup details and outside perimeter security checks once per shift.
- Monitor recreation, special inmate work details, religious services, and visitor activities.
- Escort and process inmates, visitors, and official guests; monitor inmate movement to courts/programs.
- Respond to crisis situations (fights, fire alarms, medical emergencies) according to policy and procedure.
- Maintain equipment logs and manage keys, radios, vehicles, etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
Must be a U.S. citizen, 20 years of age (21 for armed assignments), high school diploma or GED, and qualify with a weapon annually according to TCSO standards. Must meet physical readiness testing requirements.
Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, andSpecial Requirements
Must obtain a Jailer’s License from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement within one year of employment, possess a valid driver’s license, and meet the TCSO weapon training and physical readiness standards.

- Practices and procedures of jail management.
- Local ordinances and TCOLE standards pertaining to commitment, confinement, and release of prisoners.
- Operating basic computer equipment and software, including word processing and spreadsheets.
- Using detention and law enforcement equipment.
- Basic conflict resolution and community relations.
- Clear and concise verbal and written communication.
- Work as a team member in a diverse organization.
- Read and understand basic legal documents.
- Interact beyond giving instructions.
- Perform under stress and handle emergency situations.
- Maintain discipline and order in the jail.
- Make decisions and take prompt action in emergencies.
- Prepare and maintain records and logs.
- Establish effective working relationships as required.
- Take physical control of another person.
Physical requirements include lifting 20–50 pounds, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination, and operating computer and office equipment. The job requires standing, walking, sitting, jogging, running, repetitive motion, reaching, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, balancing, client/customer contact, and squatting. The environment is stressful, with exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous waste, and human fecal matter.
Duties may involve contact with criminals and may include emergency response tasks requiring a self‑contained breathing apparatus and the ability to drag a 150‑pound person 75 feet.
Must have sufficient vision without glasses to defend self and others; corrected visual acuity to 20/20 or better with uncorrected vision of 20/200 or better. Individuals who have had refractive surgery must submit a Corrected Vision Surgical Form.
