General Description

Perform entry‑level to moderately complex network work depending on the series level. Responsibilities include implementing, maintaining, and monitoring local and wide area networks, internet or intranet systems, and network segments. Work under close supervision with minimal to moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Job Functions
  • 50% Perform network startup/shutdown procedures, document work, and maintain records of network configurations.
    • Assist/monitor network status to ensure devices are functioning properly; make upgrades and repairs as needed.
    • Conduct major studies on system usage, recommend improvements, and determine network system requirements.
    • Assist with firmware updates, tuning, and capacity planning to enhance performance.
    • Review configurations for completeness and accuracy; schedule network studies and implementations.
    • Analyze existing network procedures (e.g., OpManager) for efficiency.
    • Document disaster recovery responsibilities and procedures; develop policies to ensure network integrity.
    • Document requirements and work performed relative to customers' needs to identify, predict, and evaluate system and network requirements.
    • Evaluate network performance issues and install/test equipment, connections, and firewalls.
    • Define and follow policies and procedures to ensure local and wide area network integrity; recommend improvements.
  • 25% Assist with network configurations, monitoring, and maintenance.
    • Maintain physical and logical network structures, including connections.
    • Support network software, analyze user support statistics, and recommend measures.
    • Maintain operating system and security software; add users and set privileges via Active Directory or similar.
    • Monitor operational network environment and take corrective measures.
    • Maintain LAN/WAN (e.g., Fiber, MPLS, Cellular Broadband, Metro Ethernet, VPNs), cable and hub installations, and inventories.
    • Prepare and analyze statistics on network utilization and availability.
  • 15% Conduct product evaluations of upgraded or new hardware and software; identify strengths, weaknesses, and benefits; recommend enhancements.
    • Perform tuning and capacity planning activities to enhance performance.
  • 10% Perform other duties as assigned.
    • Participate in end‑user break/fix support.
    • Prioritize and triage incidents.
    • Respond to outages.
    • Participate in a rotating on‑call schedule.
    • Maintain after‑hours maintenance windows.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Education: Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with major coursework in computer science, management information systems, network technology, information security, or a related field.
  • Network Specialist I: Minimum of 2 years experience as a network engineer or IT technician.
  • Network Specialist II: Minimum of 3 years experience as a network engineer or IT technician.
  • Willingness to complete on‑ and off‑site training to enhance job‑related skills.
  • Education and experience may be substituted on a year‑per‑year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certifications such as Cisco CCST, CCST IT Support, CCST Networking, CCT Field Technician, CCNA, CCNA Cybersecurity, or CCNP;
    CompTIA Network+ preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of network facilities, data processing techniques, computer hardware and software, network operating systems, security software, performance monitoring, and capacity management tools.
  • Skill in logic and reasoning to evaluate alternative solutions.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Great organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and resolve network problems and communicate effectively.
Physical Requirements

Standard office environment. Must be able to move around the office, lift up to 20 pounds, use a keyboard, and work with overlapping deadlines.

Workplace Preference

Candidate may choose to be based in Austin or Houston. Locations:
