Senior Network Engineer
Reports directly to the Manager, IT Infrastructure.
This position is responsible for expert support for all network technology implemented at Cap Metro, including advanced network design, planning, installation, administration, and maintenance of network routers, switches, local area networks, wide area networks, wireless networks, telephony systems, and network security. The role monitors and optimizes network performance and all network‑attached devices. It provides advanced direction and leadership to IT staff and offers expert knowledge on systems technology projects.
The engineer works independently with minimal guidance on complex issues.
- Manage wide area and local area networks, maximizing network availability and system utilization, ensuring adequate 24x7 network security.
- Anticipate internal and external business challenges and regulatory issues for process, product, or service improvements.
- Research, analyze and recommend products and services to meet new technologies and upgrades as organizational needs change.
- Provide guidance to staff in execution of IT infrastructure duties.
- Review hardware and software specs, evaluate bids and proposals.
- Implement and maintain network security with the Cyber Security Program Manager and recommend improvements.
- Deploy new network‑attached devices, including servers and software.
- Tune and capacity‑plan to enhance network performance.
- Analyze system and user data to plan and implement short‑ and mid‑range hardware improvements.
- Resolve complex system problems.
- Establish metrics to monitor network environment health, capacity, performance per industry best practices.
- Analyze monitors and optimize system/network performance.
- Solve unique, complex problems with broad business impacts.
- Provide input to supervisor for process change, enterprise system priorities, and team goals.
- Manage maintenance and license agreements; maintain hardware and software inventory.
- Lead Network team incident response and provide root‑cause analysis or incident tracking reports.
- Work effectively with vendors to maximize value of network infrastructure.
- Participate in after‑hours on‑call support rotation.
- Support Cap Metro’s Safety Management Systems (SMS) process, ensuring staff follows safety and security policies, considers safety in every action, and reports concerns.
- Perform other position‑related duties as required or assigned.
- Bachelor’s in Computer Information Systems or related field. Relevant experience may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis up to four (4) years.
- Six (6) years of progressively responsible IT experience in network and systems support with Cisco network certification, including four (4) years of experience supporting Cisco networking within a Microsoft Windows environment.
- Advanced network and system security experience required.
- Microsoft Server environment experience preferred.
- Citrix environment experience preferred.
- Virtualization experience preferred.
- Storage Area Network experience preferred.
- Customer service experience and teamwork concepts.
- Complex analytical and troubleshooting skills for hardware, software, and network issues.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Expert knowledge of server management practices and switched Ethernet networks, topologies, and protocols (TCP/IP).
- Advanced knowledge of telecommunications hardware and technologies.
- Ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining high levels of support for existing systems.
- Ability to forecast hardware requirements and associated analysis for new IT implementations.
Work is generally performed in an office environment with minimal exposure to unpleasant or hazardous conditions. Duties include managing employee work of a complex nature, standing and sitting frequently during an eight‑hour shift, reaching overhead and horizontally, using a telephone or headset, lifting and moving up to 20 lbs., working 6‑8 hours at a computer terminal, and functioning in an environment with constant interruptions.
