QualificationsThe Telecommunications Technician position requires 1-2 years of experience. Candidates must have:
- Own basic hand tools
- Knowledge of safety procedures
- Knowledge of test equipment
- Knowledge of fiber optics and communications systems
- Knowledge of telecommunications switching technology
- Knowledge of computers and local area networking
- Understanding of fundamental radio frequency (RF) communications theory
- Knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP/Ethernet)
- Knowledge of VoIP fundamentals (RTP, jitter, delay, codecs)
- Knowledge of IP routing and Ethernet switching functions
- Familiarity with LAN, WAN, wireless, and VoIP networks
- Basic ability to read and interpret schematics and diagrams
- Skills in troubleshooting electronic equipment and operating test equipment such as multimeters, RF meters, and transmitter test sets
- Customer care and support skills
- Ability to program routers and switches, including voice-enabled networking devices
- Skills in configuring call routing in Cisco VoIP applications
- Basic troubleshooting skills for LAN/WAN problems
- Experience with LAN/WAN quality monitoring systems, including VoIP tools
- Basic knowledge of Unix
- Basic familiarity with RFL, Nortel operating systems, Hyper Terminal for direct serial connections to radios and notebooks
Physical requirements include lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, pushing or pulling up to 50 pounds, and frequent use of fingers/hands for keyboard operation. The role involves constant standing and walking during installation and repair tasks, with less than 20% of the time spent climbing, crawling, crouching, or working in non-sitting positions such as punching down phone cables, testing, installation, cable pulls, and tower climbing.
